Samsung Electronics has taken the wraps off the Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra. This is how much they cost in South Africa.

However, the company has no plans to make these available in South Africa due to the relatively small size of the local PC market. The S23 Ultra keeps the same 5 000mAh battery as previous models. However, reports this week suggested the company may look to reintroduce Exynos chips in the 2024 Galaxy S models. Samsung also unveiled a range of Galaxy Book3 notebook PCs on Wednesday. The new phones will be available in stores from 24 February. - 6.1-, 6.6- and 6.8-inch screens for the Galaxy 23, Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra versions, respectively.

It's impressive just how much more detail you get from the new 200MP sensor - notice the Kodak Instamatic 33 lettering (if you can spot it) - it's nearly unreadable on the Galaxy S22 Ultra and is fully readable on the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The 3x and 10x images are also sharper on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, noticeably so at that. The Galaxy S23 Ultra retains fine textures, which its predecessor has simply smeared to nonexistence. Sharpness is ramped up on the Galaxy S23 Ultra shots compared to the S22 Ultra ones, which augments the feel of higher detail. The photo of the shelves is in dimmer light, while the final image of our cleaning closet space is in almost complete darkness. I've spent the past day with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, kicking off the review process and here are my early thoughts.

Sure, there are UI quirks that I’m not a huge fan of – like the blocky shape of notifications in the notification shade – but on the whole, Samsung does a good job at enhancing the Android experience already on offer. I’ve only had limited opportunities to snap away – there isn’t much of interest on my daily commute on the tube – but what pictures I have snapped so far I’ve been very impressed by. Everything feels near-instantaneous, from swiping across the various app menus to playing casual games like Survivor.io when on the train, and I’m confident that this will generate some of the best benchmarking scores for a phone yet once I put it to the test in the coming days. The latter is a plus for me personally as I’m not a huge fan of dramatically curved displays, especially when it’s (usually) paired with sub-par palm rejection tech. It makes sense in terms of productivity, and I’ve enjoyed the extra screen real estate on offer so far, but blimey, it’s hard to use one-handed — and that’s coming from someone who has no complaints about using most big-screen phones. I'll have more details on the Galaxy S23 Ultra's camera, battery life and performance in our full review. The sequence on her sweater also looks more colorful in the S23 Ultra's photo than in pictures taken with the Galaxy S22 Ultra and Pixel 7 Pro. That said, the Galaxy S23 Ultra's selfie is much brighter than the Pixel 7 Pro's photo. In fact, I prefer the Galaxy S22 Ultra's selfie over the S23 Ultra's in the images below. The Galaxy S23 Ultra also excelled under mixed lighting and captured vibrant photos, as shown in the image below taken in CNET's kitchen. It's too soon to tell how long the Galaxy S23 Ultra's battery will last on a single charge, but my review unit dropped to roughly 90% around lunchtime after starting the day at 100%. But whether the photo is better than pictures taken on the Pixel 7 Pro or Galaxy S22 Ultra depends on your preference. The only major aesthetic difference is its color; the Galaxy S23 lineup is available in cream, green, lavender and black, while its predecessor came in burgundy, green, white and black in addition to a few Samsung-exclusive colors. It was her favorite of the bunch when compared to similar photos I took of her with the Pixel 7 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra.
