The most recent outcome ended Blackburn's three-game winless streak. However, they have only won one of their last five games at home and may struggle here.

Maloney’s first pick is not exactly clear, especially in terms of the team’s formation, as Wigan has been using a three-man backline recently. The Latics have won four of their six league games this season on the road. In their last three games in this matchup, the hosts have not kept a clean sheet.

It's been a confident start from the Latics, who have seen plenty of the ball early on. Rovers are almost in a back five off the ball with Thomas tracking McClean all the way back. Wigan have only won four times on their travels this term and so Rovers are favourite to get the three points. Wigan are under new management after the decision to sack Kolo Toure. [Rovers](https://www.lancs.live/all-about/blackburn-rovers-fc) haven't been in league action since their 1-1 draw with Bristol City over a fortnight ago but have safely secured their passage to the FA Cup fifth round after a 1-0 win over Birmingham City on Tuesday night.

I could only see from the side but it looked like there was contact. And the Latics could consider themselves unfortunate not to take the lead within minutes. New boy Martin Kelly made his mark for the visitors just after the hour. Wigan kept pushing as Blackburn began to run out of ideas during the first half. The Blackburn man was given way too much space down the right of Wigan's half but his finish was poor, with the striker signposting his shot as he prepared to pull the trigger.

Blackburn Rovers fail to find a way through against Wigan Athletic (Lancashire Telegraph)

Not that Rovers had it all their own way in a game that Wigan were very much in and had chances of their own, while Martin Kelly had a goal ruled out for a foul ...

Seven added minutes gave rise to the potential of a late winner, though Morton wasted a free kick when opting to shoot despite bodies in the box, as Amos watched it wide of his near post. Rovers weren’t looking assured at the back, with Lang in particular growing into the game and giving Hayden Carter a tough time, as the defender was shown a yellow card for pulling him back with 20 minutes to go. Tempers flared in the closing minute, James McClean booked for a wide challenge on Rankin-Costello who was carded for his reaction that saw a melee infront of the Riverside Stand. As Thomas began to become more involved, Sam Gallagher was sent on in place of Vale, while Tyler Morton replaced John Buckley as part of a double change just after the hour. Both sides were starting to commit a few more bodies forward sensing their opportunity in a game that was very much there for the taking. There were no changes for the start of the second half, one Rovers looked to start on the front foot. The visitors were clearly growing in confidence and pushed Rovers back, with Thomas and Brereton forced to retreat deep into their own halves as a result. Rovers on the other hand were struggling to make the ball stick in attack, with Jack Vale failing to get involved on what was his third consecutive league start. Operating in a more advanced role, he linked up with Thomas to square for Joe Rankin-Costello who dragged his shot wide of the target. Lewis Travis was back in the Rovers side for his first league start since December 10 and looked to make the most of it. His struggles, added to the lack of additions, leave head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson with plenty to ponder in the second half of the season. Rovers missed the chance to move back into the play-off spots as they were held to a goalless draw at home to Wigan Athletic.
