Denosa’s concern with this is that the South African government will become heavily dependent on foreign countries to fund the production of nurses even for its own citizens.” The organisation also expects the South African government to not be part of the ongoing global phenomenon whereby developed and developing countries are poaching the few nurses in low-income countries that are struggling to produce appropriate numbers of healthcare professionals, as a result of their poor economic standing.” “Denosa’s major concern is that, due to South Africa’s unresolved challenge of producing specialist nurses from its system, the country is well on its way to becoming the disruptor of healthcare services in many African countries, as many nurses in those countries would be willing to come to South Africa when their countries can barely afford to produce specialist nurses,” he said.

CITADEL’s Chief Economist, Maarten Ackerman says “The nation at this point is looking for one thing and that is for a solution of the structural issues that are preventing us from moving forward, of which obviously the electricity issue is front of mind, but it’s not just that. The second category is the impact of this load shedding, particularly on small businesses as well as households, so here the question is, how is the government going to support struggling households and struggling businesses.” The president we hope will announce a state of the disaster and that every possible resource and support will be given to Eskom by all organs of state and society to ensure that we can reduce load shedding.

It is widely expected that if a state of disaster is to be declared, Ramaphosa will make the announcement during his address. The progress involving initiatives such as the National Anti-Corruption Strategy 2020-2030 is expected to be provided. The question has become one of timing. Talk around the same or further social assistance can be expected by the president tomorrow. He is also expected to address the country’s unacceptably high unemployment rate. The grant was introduced in May 2020 as a temporary measure however has been extended several times since then. Corruption is among the key areas of concern for South Africans. With South Africa’s ongoing record load shedding and cash-strapped consumers battling to survive amid a cost of living crisis, all eyes are on the president to deliver solutions. “Firstly, we do find ourselves in a global context of very low economic growth. The president will also be under pressure to confront the issue of high-profile persons being involved in the looting of the state. “Secondly, it’s a watershed moment because there are many issues that we are conscious of. The president said that work was being down within the government to establish whether the legal requirements of a national state of disaster are met and what specific actions the government could be empowered to undertake.

The State of the Nation Address is set to take place tomorrow (09 February 2023) and many South Africans are waiting to hear what the president will say.

So announcing a basic income grant at the address tomorrow could both help South Africans as well as look good for the president. There are a large number of South Africans who are asking for a basic income grant, one that would help people who are living in poverty survive and feed their families. News of possibly declaring a national State of disaster have been circulating for a while now, however it hasn’t happened yet.

“We don’t need to hear of additional support for corruption fighting. Despite South Africa’s electricity constraints, Ramaphosa has repeatedly promised in all his past SoNAs a revival of economic growth and job creation. We need believable implementation of the many plans that are promised. “The Edelman Trust barometer has, for many years, indicated that South Africans have one of the lowest rates of trust in its government, with distrust as the default position. Outa also expects Ramaphosa to show significant support to strengthen the criminal justice system and institutions that were hollowed out by State capture, and to take action to implement the recommendations of the State Capture Commission to combat corruption and organised crime syndicates. We need impact,” he said.

Civic organisations want President Cyril Ramaphosa to deliver more concrete plans to fix the country in his State of the Nation Address on Thursday.

Our crises are too great and can only be resolved if we all make our contributions for the progress of the nation." It is killing our futures. We have left these problems to people who seek to make profits only," he said. Our democracy is killing us. We need to transfer and create people's power. An open letter to Cyril Ramaphosa from retail CEOs (Financial Mail)

CEOs of member companies of the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa call for urgency on energy crisis.

We take our responsibility to feed and sustain the nation very seriously. We will support the government where we can and ask urgently for decisive action from you. We will continue to work tirelessly to sustain our customers and communities. We look forward to hearing your plans for action in the 2023 state of the nation address, giving due consideration to the proposals put forward in this letter by the CEOs who are signatories. We are alarmed and dismayed by the levels of load-shedding which we have all had to endure over the past decade, and which have escalated catastrophically in recent months. We require urgent and decisive action from the government to solve the crisis, and specific steps to ensure that the consumer goods industry can fulfil its role as an essential service for every family in the country.

The radical left-wing EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters) party has vowed to disrupt the speech of the "delinquent" president. The ceremony is usually conducted with great pomp and circumstance at Parliament: red carpet, fancy suits and designer dresses, and photographers. But according to Dieter von Fintel, an economist at the University of Stellenbosch, this purely "symbolic" measure would only have the virtue of calming down an opinion that is already losing confidence, since the real problem lies in the fact that "the energy crisis is short-circuiting any attempt to revive the economy and is now a threat to social stability.
