Patriotic Alliance's stunning victory breaks ANC and DA's 15-year ... (Daily Maverick)

Having put together a solid set of results, Gayton McKenzie's Patriotic Alliance now controls the narrative of being the most credible alternative to the DA ...

The PA struggled to get DIF and EFF voters to turn out for it, while the DA also battled to get FF+ voters out for its candidate. What happened in other parts of Dikgatlong also happened in Ward 6: the PA took votes from the ANC and the DA to finish runner-up. It currently controls the narrative of being the most credible alternative to the DA in the Western Cape in 2024. There is also a competitive by-election in Mtubatuba where the IFP will have a chance of creating more stability for itself in a municipality where it is currently dependent on three smaller parties. The ANC won these two districts comfortably in the by-election – going from 33% to 54% at Delportshoop High School – while the DA went from 20% to 28%. McKenzie, the Central Karoo mayor, emerges as the most likely challenger to the DA in the Western Cape in 2024. GOOD won one of the Maitland voting districts and tied with the PA in the relatively vote-rich St John’s Church district in Maitland. The PA won 56% of the vote here as well, getting the same percentage the DA did in 2021. The DA only won more than 50% of the vote in two of the eight voting districts in the ward. In the by-election, it was where the PA did best, winning 56% of the vote. De Lille, now leader of GOOD, went into this by-election as the leader of the party most likely to break the DA and ANC’s 15-year duopolistic hold on ward seats in Cape Town. Patricia de Lille was the last leader of a political party not from the DA or the ANC to win a ward in the City of Cape Town.

Patriotic Alliance snatches DA ward in Western Cape (Independent Online)

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) announced the results on Thursday that the PA won ward 56 in the Cape metro from the DA.

The ANC won this ward by 67.21% of the vote compared to 44.19% in the last local government elections in November 2021. Voter turnout yesterday was 20.52%,” said the IEC. The Patriotic Alliance (PA) has dislodged the DA from its ward in Cape Town while the ANC held onto its ward in the Northern Cape in the latest rounds of by-elections held on Wednesday.

South Africa: Cape Town's 'Day Zero' Threat Concentrated Minds ... (AllAfrica.com)

Analysis - Major cities across the world are being increasingly plagued by severe water shortages. From Bangalore, India to São Paulo, Brazil and even ...

By the end of 2018 the city began easing water restrictions. The recognition and support of such groups should not be limited to times of crisis; concerns of socio-ecological justice cannot wait for the next drought or ecological crisis. This 420km2 underground water source has played an essential role in the PHA being an agricultural hub, and since Day Zero, to augment the City's water supply. Around late 2018, restrictions on water use and favourable rainfall pulled Cape Town away from the brink of Day Zero. [showed](https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/23323256.2022.2141810) that groups like the PHA Campaign have known for a long time about the lack of satisfactory protection of Cape Town's water resources. During this time, the PHA Campaign was able to pair its criticism of industrial agriculture with the need to save water. One of the PHA Campaign's most significant victories was a court case it won against developers in February 2020. My research illustrated how Day Zero was important in focusing attention and action on how water - and natural resources more generally - are used in Cape Town, especially in the context of climate change. The chairperson, Nazeer Sonday, has been farming in the area since the Groups Areas Act was repealed in 1991. The research found that Day Zero was a turning point for how water issues were seen and used by groups such as the PHA Campaign. The Philippi Horticultural Area has been farmed commercially since the 1850s. The role of justice-oriented activist groups will become increasingly important in managing these crises.

CCID on a mission to clean the Cape Town CBD - The Home Of ... (www.sagoodnews.co.za)

“Illegal dumping, graffiti tagging, cigarette-butt litter and waste that spills out of torn litter bags remain the biggest challenges for CCID Urban Management.

Despite the increasing numbers of people entering the CBD daily, our collective efforts have successfully removed masses of illegally dumped waste and reignited the public’s interest in our beautiful CBD,” concludes Benito. The CCID’s Urban Management team still facilitates the daily removal of illegally dumped litter from public spaces. One of these partnerships is a night-time cleaning operation between the CCID’s Safety and Security department and its Urban Management teams, with assistance from the City’s Solid Waste Management Department. This spend was in addition to the standard removal of waste, which includes litter and organic matter such as leaves, twigs, and soil, by the City of Cape Town. The teams clear waste in Adderley, Strand, Plein, and Darling streets and successfully complement existing Urban Sweeping teams. “Illegal dumping, graffiti tagging, cigarette-butt litter and waste that spills out of torn litter bags remain the biggest challenges for CCID Urban Management.

Investec Cape Town Art Fair: Works by African artists showcased at ... (Independent Online)

Works by artists from across the African continent will grace the walls of the Mount Nelson Belmond Hotel prior to the opening of the 10th annual Investec ...

The exhibition Today, I wish to talk to your dreams, curated by Amogelang Maledu, can be found displayed in areas of the hotel, from the reception, lobby, lounge, Planet Bar and hallways. “I was thinking through African futurism, history, thinking of the present, thinking of futures and artists that really speak to the embedding of the historical present where all of these moments meet – the future, the past, and the present, so that’s really what informed the bringing of the artworks into this space.” “African futurism was also very important as a useful concept that informed the thinking of the works on display but also the spatiality of this historical hotel,” Maledu said.
