Manchester City v Arsenal: Women's Super League – live (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: It's a crunch meeting in the WSL season. Join Rob Smyth for all the latest.

Kelly wanders infield and pokes a terrific through pass to Shaw, who tries to go round the outrushing Zinsberger but it’s a bit too tight and instead she runs the ball straight into her. It wasn’t an easy chance as she was stooping away from goal in an attempt to head the ball. It’s the most obvious point in the world but it doesn’t make it any less relevant. Little finds Maritz, whose early cross hits the shoulder of Blackstenius at the near post and goes well wide. She charged down the inside-left channel and threaded a low cross towards Hemp, Kelly or both. Were it not for errant finishing and good goalkeeping from Manuela Zinsberger, the match would already be over. Interestingly, Karen Carney, who is in the Sky studio, thinks Zinsberger was to blame for the first goal rather than Wubben-Moy or Maritz. She resisted Houghton’s challenge and sidefooted a shot from 12 yards that hit the near post, ricocheted onto the left leg of the keeper Roebuck and dribbled just wide. Her argument, which is pretty persuasive, is that Zinsberger should “take ownership” of the six-yard box. 53 min Coombs robs the dithering Walti 30 yards from goal. Hasegawa collects, 25 yards out, and crashes a dipping drive against the crossbar! Arsenal are dominating possession, albeit with City’s possibly unconscious consent, at this precise moment they look more likely to get the next goal.

Manchester City v Arsenal preview: three key battlegrounds in ... (The Offside Rule)

The two teams played out a rather turgid Continental Cup semi-final this week. But will Arsenal be able to come out on top again in the league this ...

Neither team showed their best on Wednesday, but it remains to be seen whether either was trying to keep their powder dry for the arguably more important WSL fixture. This match would be the perfect opportunity for them to let rip. If Arsenal fail to get a victory, it will be their longest winless streak in the WSL since January 2021, where they drew with Reading before losing to Chelsea and Manchester City in succession. She has consistently shown this season that she is at her best as a number 10, and the way she won the ball ahead of Arsenal’s goal showed why she is so effective. Arsenal eventually came out on top, with Stina Blackstenius scoring their winner in the 93rd minute. It was supposed to be the showcase fixture that kicked off the Women’s Super League season.

The City players are having a team huddle and can reflect on a job well done. Man City 2-1 Arsenal Playing with such a great group of girls is brilliant, we showed lots of fight today and it's about the team. She is unbelievable for us and when you have that link up with such a special player it is brilliant. "It was a brilliant day and we knew when we play at home that nobody can play against us. "I was so proud of the performance and how gutsy we were in the second half. We wanted to give the travelling support much more joy today and I want to thank them for their support and for giving us support and encouragement. We needed to make them more after scoring the goal. We have to all believe in the way that we want to play and then we can create great things together." We tried to implement changes during the game as well but it is 100% my responsibility. "I think we lost possession way too many times in the game, especially in very dangerous areas. FT: Man City 2-1 Arsenal

Arsenal vs Manchester City player ratings as several poor in WSL ... (Football.London)

Arsenal Women fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City in the Women's Super League clash at the Manchester City Academy Stadium.

Victoria Pelova - A really quiet game for Arsenal's new signing, held onto the ball a little too long on occasion. Her first real chance came early in the second half, a fantastic run and was denied by the post. Subbed at the break. Put in a dangerous free-kick before the break but Arsenal were unable to make anything of it. Steph Catley - Gave Hemp and Kelly too much space first half when the hosts were well on top. Struggled to keep possession on occasion when under pressure from City players. Noelle Maritz - Allows Lauren Hemp to get ahead of her for the opener, caught ball watching on too many occasions. Leah Williamson - A rare poor performance from the defender, moved into midfield but almost instantly gave the ball away. Despite late pressure, Arsenal were unable to complete the comeback and snatch something from the game. Instead, it was defender Rafaelle Souza who handed Jonas Eidevall's side a lifeline with a headed effort to make it 2-1. A similar mistake occurred early into the second half, this time substitute Lia Walti lost out but the eventual effort was blocked. City, though, capitalised on some poor defending from the Gunners as Lauren Hemp tapped home to give them the lead shortly after.
