It has been over three months since I looked at my UCL team — What should I do?
I have to say I’m not completely satisfied by this, and I still have 2.6m euros in the bank, which is Alehouse WAGs level cash (quite a lot) in this format. [excellent article](https://www.nevermanagealone.com/2023/2/12/23593687/champions-league-player-picks-round-of-16-first-leg-strategy-best-team-match-up-real-madrid-man-city) where he proposes a lot of similar thinking, so it’s good to know I am not alone in my thoughts (and he’s 28 points ahead of me, so I should be listening!). Typically the number of points on offer drops in each successive knockout round since teams are more evenly matched and the smaller number of games to pick from means picking some less-productive choices in each. So I have tried to pick players from teams I think will win this round at least. I put that down to a combination of lack of knowledge and holding on to chips for too long. [Champions League](https://www.sbnation.com/champions-league) returns to action this week, and for some of us, we’d probably forgotten that we were even playing UCL fantasy!

A closer look at the key battles between Bayern Munich and PSG ahead of their titanic round of 16 Champions League clash.
Seven-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi had the last laugh in Doha with two goals and a helping hand in the other, before converting in the shootout. Bayern figure to have the advantage in midfield with Germany internationals Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka patrolling the central areas and the impressive Jamal Musiala in a more advanced role. The France star, the joint-leading scorer in this season's Champions League with seven goals, will miss the first leg with a thigh injury and there are concerns over Lionel Messi too after the Argentine hurt his hamstring during Wednesday's 2-1 loss to Marseille in the French Cup.

Celebrity Villa fan Tom Hanks is in the house. With the first real attack of the game Villa lead. Very tight after that Arsenal equalizer. What a first half at Villa Park. HALF TIME: Aston Villa 2-1 Arsenal. Arsenal cranking up the pressure now. So close to a stunning goal for Villa as Bailey did so well to control, run and spank an effort at goal. 3 of Casemiro’s three-game suspension for the red card he received in the Man United victory over Crystal Palace two weeks ago, with the Red Devils just a win away from taking 7 of 9 points during the Brazilian’s ban — not small feat given his considerable impact since arriving from Real Madrid in the summer. Manchester United have lost just once (to Arsenal) in their last 10 Premier League games (7W-2D-1L), and they have Marcus Rashford’s red-hot form to thank for that. Leicester (24 points), meanwhile, are up to 13th after picking up back-to-back victories amid their current three-game unbeaten run. The Hammers have a bit of momentum amid a three-game unbeaten run (victory over Everton, followed by back-to-back draws with Newcastle and Chelsea), though they are winless in their last four trips to north London (0W-1D-3L). West Ham (20 points – 18th place), meanwhile, find themselves in the relegation zone after winning just one of their last 10 PL games (1W-3D-6L).

For Porto, there is a certain Diego Costa (€5.2m) in goal, with his insane record of saving penalties. Lautaro Martinez (€8.5m) has scored five goals in his last five Serie A games, while their wing-backs are always good for an attacking contribution but do get rotated a lot. Meanwhile, reigning champions Real Madrid will visit Anfield for a replay of last season’s final. On the same day, Benfica visit Club Brugge and are favourites for progression. This is very important as it gives you the luxury of using free transfers on catching some in-form players and differentials instead of fixing holes. On Wednesday, in-form Borussia Dortmund host a Chelsea side that has drawn their last three league games. The bookmakers are favouring Manchester City to grab their first UCL title but, before Gameweek 23, their recent performances had dipped. Champions League football is back this coming Tuesday! Victor Osimhen (€7.9m, 16 goals and three assists) and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (€5.9m, eight goals and nine assists) are strong contenders to be in my squad, while a strong case can be made for adding an attacking defender like Giovanni Di Lorenzo (€5.1m). Players like Jamal Musiala (€7.0m, ten goals and six assists in the Bundesliga) and Leroy Sane (€9.3m, six goals and three assists) must be strongly considered because the German champions are a real contender for the trophy. Kepa Arrizabalaga (€4.5m) and Reece James (€6.2m) may be my favourite ways of investing in Chelsea, while the current form of Jude Bellingham (€7.5m) makes him the go-to option for Dortmund. The second game of the night will see a Kylian Mbappe-less (€11.3m) Paris Saint Germain host Bayern Munich in a tie that I believe has the French outfit attempting to keep their chances alive for his probable return in the return leg.

[Manchester Cit](https://www.90min.com/teams/manchester-city)y should win the Champions League this year. The current holders and recent Club World Cup winners have a pedigree that no other team has in this competition. Bayern haven't been as impressive as you'd expect in the Bundesliga this season - it's February and they still haven't won the league - but in Europe they've excelled. [PSG](https://www.90min.com/teams/psg) have about a million in theirs. The only issue is they seem to have a few bottlers in it too (we're not going to name names), and their manager Christophe Galtier still hasn't quite found a tactic that gets the best out of the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. Oh and they're also facing Bayern in the round of 16. The Portuguese side have been exceptional both in Europe and domestically this season. A lot of it on positions they were already pretty stacked in (wide midfield), but the signings of Enzo Fernandez and Joao Felix could make the Blues a tricky out in the latter stages of the Champions League this season. Portuguese opposition has brought out the best and the worst in Club Brugge already this season so which version of the Belgian hopefuls will turn up at the Jan Breydelstadion? Add in the fact that another Spurs striker, Peter Crouch, scored the only goal of the game and the tie, at San Siro when the London side beat Milan at this stage in 2011, and Conte's charges should be optimistic. Scott Parker, who took the reins from Carl Hoefkens at the start of this year, has outlined what we can expect from him as Club Brugge coach: "How am I as a coach? His teams tended to thrive in the derby, the Nerazzurri winning four of their five meetings with the Rossoneri and scoring at least twice in all those victories. The knockout stages commence on 14 February with a repeat of the 2020 final between Paris and Bayern among the choice cuts on offer. Dr Rodrigues said last year in a UEFA statement: "The events of 28 May were distressing for everyone involved. "In addition, the organisation before, during and after the game - and the heavy-handed treatment of fans - was predicated on flawed intelligence and the inaccurate preconceptions and prejudices of the authorities. Mayor of the Liverpool City Region Steve Rotheram said: "UEFA's report vindicates what I and other fans have been saying all along: that is, it was the fans who averted a disaster and were clearly not to blame, whilst the organisers - UEFA and the French authorities - were really responsible. "Fans who travelled to Paris expecting the night of their lives were put in harm's way by the very people who are meant to protect them. Access issues to the stadium on the outskirts of Paris - following defective route planning from a train station - contributed to congestion and dangerous scenes on May 28. There was truncated planning for the final after UEFA was forced to find a new venue due to Russia launching its invasion of Ukraine. The match was delayed for 37 minutes as a combination of operational problems outside the venue created access issues for distressed fans - particularly those who are disabled and asthmatics who had to contend with the tear gas and pepper spray. A UEFA-commissioned review into the poor treatment of Liverpool fans outside the 2022 Champions League final has found the failings "almost led to a disaster" after faults by European football's governing body and the lack of a venue risk assessment by French authorities. The lack of a "Plan B" is said to have been uncovered - contingencies that could have seen stewards and police redeployed to deal with crowd management challenges. Police blamed for not being proactive enough in intervening when locals - who tried to climb fences and jump turnstiles - attacked fans, and for being over-reliant on the use of tear gas and pepper spray on blameless fans.

Their incompetence and negligence could have led to a far more serious situation had it not been for the restraint of the Liverpool supporters who know all about the history of what happened at Hillsborough in 1989. The real number of counterfeit Liverpool tickets turned out to be 1,600 - which is no more than usually expected for a game of that size. "It is now obvious that three months was not enough time to organise a Champions League final. Dr Rodrigues said last year in a UEFA statement: "The events of 28 May were distressing for everyone involved. The FFF didn't respond to messages for comment through email and its media website on Monday. "And they should apologise and thank Liverpool supporters for the way they behaved." UEFA as event owner has been assigned "primary responsibility" but it's understood some commission members disagreed with the conclusion. "Although the French police were out in force before the game, they were nowhere to be seen when supporters were being mugged and attacked as they were leaving the game. "The truth is that the real blame lies with UEFA, the French authorities and the French police. "A Champions League final should be a celebration of football but in Paris it turned into a nightmare for tens of thousands of supporters because of failures on the part of the people who were supposed to be looking after them. "What happened on 28 May 2022 was the fault of UEFA, the French authorities and the French police. The panel has found that the evidence does not support these assertions.” The panel has found no evidence of any organised attempt to do so.” The turnstile arrangements were “unable to cope” with the increased pressure after the checkpoint was abandoned at 7.45pm. The panel found that Uefa’s safety and security unit was “marginalised” by the Uefa events organisers and did not perform the required role of overseeing the safety requirements. It was a “serious failure” not to try to resolve these issues. “The panel has not been able to identify any effective action taken by the safety and security unit …

The findings of the "independent report" should lead to the removal of figures in high positions. "It's been over eight months of work by the independent panel and it is only right and proper to publish the contents of the report to our supporters appropriately. Finally, the report blasted UEFA and French security forces for deleting security footage of the incidents surrounding the stadium. Champions League knockout stage play also begins this week, meaning the report would be further minimised in coverage of European competition. “The panel is also troubled by a number of stark differences as to the facts of what happened, and a general default position of blaming the Liverpool supporters, without any proper evidential basis. As the days progressed and more disturbing facts were released, UEFA continued to ascertain that supporters were to blame for the disturbances. The panel is also troubled by a number of stark differences as to the facts of what happened, and a general default position of blaming the Liverpool supporters, without any proper evidential basis.” In a statement, the organisation did not say that it accepted the panel’s findings, saying it was “currently analysing” them “and assessing them against its own analysis of the organisation of the event and facts that occurred around it”. Uefa’s events arm “marginalised” the safety and security unit, and did not follow its own safety requirements, “a recipe for the failures” that occurred. The report also states the panel was “very disappointed” that Uefa asked that sections of an interview given by an unnamed senior Uefa executive, relating to evidence they gave to the French Senate, be redacted on the grounds of maintaining their anonymity. The risk of a crushing disaster was highest at that point, the panel found, as large numbers of supporters came on to the forecourt and found static queues. The second claim, that thousands of Liverpool fans were at the stadium without valid tickets, originated with the French police and ministers, and was given to the media by Uefa at the end of the match. The checkpoint increasingly failed to cope with the huge numbers of people crammed into the queue, and was abandoned at 7.45pm, the report states. [Liverpool](https://www.theguardian.com/football/liverpool) and thousands of their supporters, and in media reports, including the Guardian’s investigation. “The dangerous conditions on the concourse outside the turnstiles were compounded by the police deploying teargas at disorderly groups of locals, as well as using pepper spray on supporters trying to gain entrance with valid tickets,” the report states. Although a decision to delay kick-off should be taken by the acting police commander in liaison with Uefa’s safety and security unit and that of the local football association running the game, the report states, Ceferin himself made the decision, in a stairwell of the stadium’s VIP area, where he had been having a meeting with the king of Spain. The report states that there is no evidence to support such claims, which were made in a “reprehensible” attempt by the authorities to avoid responsibility. [Uefa](https://www.theguardian.com/football/uefa) review expresses concern that lessons have not been learned, saying with reference to the evidence of Michel Cadot, the French government official responsible for major sporting events: “Despite Mr Cadot’s willingness to accept that mistakes had been made [at the final], the panel is concerned that there remains a misconception about what actually happened and a complacency regarding what needs to change.

UEFA-appointed investigators have held governing body responsible for chaotic security failures at the 2022 Champions League final in Paris.
I loved the atmosphere, it is an insane atmosphere people create here,” Klopp said. We probably had 70% possession and scored from two counters, that makes it special,” he said later. Mo Salah opened the scoring in the 36th minute. “Tonight we were there and that has to be the sign for us what we have to do. Klopp hopes the win in the 242nd Merseyside derby can provide lift-off for a team that challenged for an unprecedented quadruple last season. The Holland forward, a $45 million signing from PSV Eindhoven last month, had failed to score in his previous six appearances for his new club, but couldn’t miss after Trent Alexander-Arnold fired a cross to the far post.

They have been ruthless this season, and I think that will be the difference here. Die Adler was the only team in this season’s Champions League to partake in the competition for the first time in the the UCL era. Fighting for a UCL spot in the Bundesliga, Frankfurt will be motivated for their meeting with Napoli. They are the only side left in the Champions League to have played in the qualifying rounds. This time around, the Italians have to be considered favourites. Goals are not hard to come by for Napoli, who have already scored 76 times at the time of writing. Even qualifying for the Champions League via the league for next year is looking unfavourable for Jürgen Klopp’s men. [going on another spending spree in January](https://playingfor90.com/2023/01/11/chelsea-land-joao-felix-loan/), the Blues have won just once this calendar year (1-4-3). Chelsea has more to lose here, as it is looking increasingly likely that a third Champions League triumph is the Blues’ only way back to the tournament next season. Despite both teams being regulars in Europe, this is the first time Club Brugge and Benfica will meet in UEFA club competition. For that, I will have to go with the Parisians in this one. In what promises to be a highly entertaining two legs, it is difficult to say who will progress from this one.

It said UEFA’s president, Aleksander Ceferin, was asked to make a call on delaying the kickoff even though he had not been in the match control room or in contact with security officials; he had been in a meeting with the King of Spain in a V.I.P. “Unfortunately, the enthusiasm around the game rapidly turned into a real ‘near miss’ which was harmful to a significant number of fans from both clubs,” the report said. The report raised new concerns about security preparations for next year’s Summer Olympics in Paris, with its authors describing events around the Champions League final as a “wake-up call” for Olympic organizers. That no lives were lost in the crushes outside the stadium gates, the investigators’ harshly critical report concluded, was only “a matter of chance.” Dangerous bottlenecks, packed entrances and ramps, and tear gas employed by the police — sometimes sprayed indiscriminately at groups of supporters that included children and disabled fans — added to the chaos. The investigation involved hundreds of interviews and the analysis of footage, including many hours of video shot by supporters caught up in the crushes as they tried to enter the stadium.

The report contains important recommendations which are relevant to everyone involved in the delivery of major football events, and positive action should be taken to ensure that this never happens again." "We were determined to make sure a robust investigation was conducted in order that lessons are learned to ensure the safety of football supporters in Europe is never compromised again. "We implore UEFA to fully enact the recommendations as outlined by the Panel – no matter how difficult – to ensure supporter safety is the number one priority at the heart of every UEFA football fixture. But even more concerning is the realisation that for families, friends and survivors of Hillsborough, Paris has only exacerbated their suffering. "The independent French Senate report published in July 2022 found Liverpool supporters were unfairly and wrongly blamed for the chaotic scenes to divert attention from the real organisational failures. In a statement issued on Tuesday morning, Liverpool urged UEFA to implement all 21 of the critical recommendations suggested by the panel.
