The cost of repairing the damage wreaked by Cyclone Gabrielle could reach NZ$13.5 billion ($8.42 billion), says Finance Minister.

We are dealing with it, but we have an incredibly talented team at Church Road that pulls together no matter what situation arises.” Much of the damage has been caused by flash flooding, which has destroyed roads, rail tracks, houses and crops. Analysts say that a surge in prices looks likely following the disruption, with inflation, already running at an almost 30-year high of 7.2%, expected to climb as the country looks to repair its infrastructure. Loss of crops will also push up food prices. Chris Scott, Church Road’s regional winemaker for Hawke’s Bay, told the drinks business: “Cyclone Gabrielle has had a significant impact on the area and we will need to assess the impact to the harvest. The large majority of the workers are men. “The devastation is real. Some workers evacuated as a precaution before the cyclone hit. It’s very sobering.” Lua is in Hawke’s Bay this week as part of the Aotearoa Tongan Response Group and a local whanau ora provider, Akiheuho, who travelled to the regions to provide food, supplies and donations to the community. They are also offering assistance to Tongan RSE workers affected in the regions. Of those people, a total of 3352 are based in Hawke’s Bay, 660 in the Bay of Plenty and 161 in Gisborne. That also meant effectively wiping out the rest of the season for workers - many of whom travel to New Zealand and Australia under the RSE scheme to earn money for their families in the islands. The news comes after hundreds of RSE workers - many of whom live on site at orchards they work at in Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne - were caught up in last week’s cyclone and subsequent severe flooding. There are nine Pacific nations involved in the RSE scheme, an initiative that started in 2007, which allows the horticulture and viticulture industries to recruit workers from overseas for seasonal work when there are not enough Kiwi workers. Country liaison for Vanuatu, Olivia Fleur Johnson, told the Herald that workers would also be sent to other regions around New Zealand to fill up gaps at different orchards and vineyards if their current employer did not have enough work for the rest of the season. Pacific seasonal workers affected by Cyclone Gabrielle are set to be offered new jobs as part of the mammoth clean-up of areas struck by severe flooding.
