Fighters say a black woman leading a historically white institution like UCT was intolerable to the ruling elite.

The EFF salutes VC Mamokgethi Phakeng for her resilience, determination and love for education, in the face of persecution. She was a stain on the white-supremacist record of UCT, and had to be removed to restore the status-quo. In the midst of her first contestation for the position, a vicious campaign was launched to question her credentials and qualifications.

Suspicions that Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng would leave UCT on early retirement still unclear.

Phakeng said the aim of the blue carpet scholarship was to attract top learners to the top university, and give them the support they needed. Days before the carpet could be rolled out, Phakeng was seen on a video calling first-year students who qualified for the scholarship and letting them know about their victory to UCT. In January, UCT rolled out the “blue carpet” for its recipients, comprised of a group of 2022 top-performing matric pupils who had applied to study at the institution.

Daily Maverick understands that there was significant pressure applied by major UCT donors for matters with Phakeng to be wrapped up as swiftly and diplomatically as possible. “I just wanted to tell you that I am fine, and happy,” Phakeng said in a video message. What was the role of the chair? What happened to the cases of bullying [reported by the former UCT ombud]? As such, it was considered essential that the ambit of the independent investigation must change. And if the panel finds her guilty, why did UCT pay her out almost R13-million?” All of that is still on the table.” The period remaining on her academic contract, however, will be taken up by a 12-month sabbatical. But recent events appear to have made the vice-chancellor’s continued leadership untenable, including an extraordinary With negotiations having seemingly reached an impasse, that suspension looked imminent. Part of the agreement is that Phakeng’s early retirement will be announced via a statement from the university which has to be approved by both parties — and which by definition is bound to be neutral. The major sticking points, Daily Maverick understands, were the amount that Phakeng was asking to be paid out, and her desire to remain in the official UCT vice-chancellor’s residence, Glenara, beyond the termination of her employment.
