Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to a further 16 years in prison for three counts of rape and sexual assault in LA.

Elsewhere, defense attorney Mark Werksman pointed out that Weinstein was a 70 year old in bad health and said he had lost four teeth while in prison. Weinstein had pleaded not guilty to all charges in both of his criminal trials and has consistently denied accusations of rape and sexual assault. Weinstein’s defense team had protested his innocence by attacking his accusers’ credibility and sexual behaviour, describing Siebel Newsom as “just another bimbo who slept with Harvey Weinstein to get ahead in Hollywood”. It’s not a whim. It’s not a feeling. “There is no prison sentence long enough to undo the damage.” [via

Harvey Weinstein L.A. Jane Doe Victim Reveals Identity (Hollywood Reporter)

Evgeniya Chernyshova, the Jane Doe whose testimony prompted a guilty verdict, on Harvey Weinstein's conviction and why she no longer chooses anonymity.

“I finally have a voice and I can speak,” she says. “This is a made-up story,” Weinstein said, while seated in a wheelchair and wearing a gray L.A. “I felt very, very dirty and like I have to die,” she says. In October of 2022, Chernyshova took the stand as Jane Doe 1 for three days of testimony in Weinstein’s trial, which she calls, “the worst experience of my life.” She couldn’t sleep during that period, and was regularly vomiting from the stress. “And that is the thing I have regretted for the last 10 years — that I did open this door,” she says. “I was hating myself,” Chernyshova says. “And she told me that she does understand, because she has been raped.” When mother and daughter realized that they shared this painful bond, Maria says, it was devastating. She didn’t feel she was in danger, she says, she felt embarrassed, and she wanted him to stop, so she opened the door. “I heard somebody talking loudly in the background, and then he took the phone and said, ‘It’s Harvey and we have to talk,’ And I was like, ‘What?’ So confused. She was the first of 44 witnesses the prosecution called to testify in the trial, and she is the only person the court allowed to deliver a statement at Weinstein’s sentencing on Feb. “A lot of people think it’s just ice there and white bears,” she says of her home. “Part of me, I’m fearing for my future,” she says of speaking publicly now.

Harvey Weinstein gets another 16 years in prison for rape (Business Day)

The charges stemmed from an assault on a former model and actress, identified in court as Jane Doe 1, at a Los Angeles hotel 10 years ago.

Defence attorneys argued that the women willingly had sex with Weinstein because they believed he would advance their careers, part of what they said was a widespread “casting couch” culture in the film industry. He was extradited from New York to California in July 2021 to face trial in Los Angeles. The movement, which went viral on social media in 2017, seeks to break a culture of silence that has long allowed such conduct to go unchallenged. Addressing the court through tears and a trembling voice near the end of Thursday’s hearing, the woman said she had been a “very happy and confident woman” until Weinstein raped her. Weinstein professed his innocence and implored the judge, “I beg your mercy,” moments before she pronounced his sentence. “This is a made-up story.

R. Kelly's and Harvey Weinstein's decades-long prison sentences ... (Fortune)

Good morning, Broadsheet readers! Female founders are making progress in the U.K., a founder of a rape kit startup charges forward despite backlash, ...

The number of new companies in the U.K. Elizabeth Koch, daughter of billionaire mogul and GOP donor Charles Koch, is promoting a new venture all about self-awareness. The presumed highest female earner makes £200,000 annually, which the best-paid male players make in roughly a week. A new study shows that women in the graduating class of 2023 expected to earn an average of $6,000 less a year than their male counterparts. Arsenal Women Football Club has given its players a 30% raise, but their salaries are still dwarfed by those of their male counterparts. Founder Madison Campbell isn't dissuaded by an overwhelmingly negative response to her idea from rape survivor advocates, who say that the kits will not be admissible in court and should remain free of cost to survivors. The address ahead of a gathering for G20 financial leaders in India symbolized the U.S.' continued support of Ukraine. “All of these things are connected; all of these things are about restricting the progress that women have made.” But the sentences delivered Thursday show that while the road toward accountability is long, real consequences—and change—are still possible. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said that funds from the $53 billion Chips Act will be invested in two innovation hubs for semiconductor production. The Kelly and Weinstein sagas are two of the most prominent #MeToo cases to make it to sentencing and offered overwhelming evidence. Judge Harry Leinenweber did note that Kelly’s victims would experience the effects of his abuse for the “rest of their lives.” Months later, that sense of fatigue is still palpable.

Harvey Weinstein to Appeal Rape Conviction After Sentencing (Variety)

Harvey Weinstein's defense team is finalizing their appeal for his L.A. conviction, which resulted in a 16-year sentence.

He was convicted on the three counts relating to Jane Doe #1 — so, it’s feasible to see where Weinstein’s defense team was hopeful in strategizing for a new trial, given that the jury did not find Weinstein guilty of the other women’s charges. “She sued him for money,” Jackson said at the sentencing, arguing that the lawsuit constitutes “new evidence” that impeaches her credibility, and told the judge the defense was “disallowed” from asking about her “financial motive.” The jury found Weinstein guilty, but in a split verdict he was also acquitted on one charge and the jury could not come to an unanimous agreement on the three remaining charges. “They would never have voted to convict if they knew the truth.” Jackson said the purpose of introducing the text messages into evidence was not for “promiscuity,” but to establish her whereabouts the night she testified she was raped. Lench said that she considered the text messages and did not believe them to be relevant evidence for the jury. The defense has said they have text messages that would impeach her credibility, and that the jury would not have convicted if the defense had been allowed to introduce those messages between her and the festival organizer.
