F1 Bahrain Grand Prix 2023 live: Highlights and analysis as ... (Sporting News)

Red Bull's Max Verstappen starts from pole position for the opening race of the 2023 Formula One season at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Ferrari duo start just behind with title hopeful Leclerc saving an extra set of soft tyres for the race after completing just one flying lap in Q3 on Saturday. For viewers planning to live stream F1 in 2023, you can watch via the Sky Go app if you're an existing subscriber or you can purchase For fans in Canada, TSN will carry the English-language telecast of races. Lap 13: Alonso is beginning to put some sizeable pressure on Russell in the battle for P6. The Frenchman finished in P16 in Q1 but then had his second lap time deleted after failing to keep within track limits. Not long left now until we go racing for the first time in 2023 at the Bahrain Grand Prix! Lap 26: Perez overtakes Leclerc for P2 of the Bahrain Grand Prix! Elsewhere the two Aston Martin's come together but both look fine to continue on for now. Lap 32: Red Bull's Perez is really opening up the gap to Leclerc in their fight for P2. The Frenchman takes a five-second penalty for not lining up properly on the grid, likely too far forward in his box. Oh, and now its another five seconds on top for speeding in the pit lane. Lap 33: The undercut works for Stroll.

F1 LIVE - Formula 1s Bahrain Grand Prix race: Latest updates (MARCA.com)

Perez pressures Leclerc Perez is just 0.7 seconds behind Leclerc and looking to reclaim that second place. Leclercs out of DRS range from Verstappen s.

It's a Red Bull lockout on the front row but it should be an exciting battle for the podium between Alonso, Ferrari and Mercedes while the midfield fight also looks incredibly tight, so lots to get excited about! Alonso is right behind Russell, and the Brit just complained his tyres are gone over the radio but he's managed to hold Alonso off for a lap. It's obviously clear skies, but the wind has dropped a so shouldn't be too much of an issue for the drivers His team have got back on the radio with a solution, we'll need to see if that works for the Dutchman. Piastri had a gearbox issue on track, the team attempted to fix it by switching steering wheels but to no avail and the Australian is the first retirement of the season. He's just got on team radio hinting he has more pace than Hamilton as the teammate games only took nine laps to begin at Mercedes but there's been no word from the pitwall for now. To add insult to injury, he's now been handed another five seconds on top of that for speeding in the pitlane. Perez has closed right up to the back of Leclerc now. Stroll had pitted a lap before and Stroll is able to make a move stick for seventh place. After he was unable to get alongside after the two DRS zones on lap 38 he caught Hamilton napping up the inside of turns 9 and 10, with the Brit seemingly focussing on defending on the next straight. Sainz is currently third but just 1.5 seconds ahead of Alonso, with Hamilton three seconds behind the Spaniard. Alonso made short work of Sainz really, but Hamilton has been unable to get the same move done.

Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton will start from seventh on the grid, and he did not exactly seem too impressed with his new car, calling it "average" and saying it ...

But then we got to qualifying and for me the car just didn't feel alive, it felt kind of average." the light at the end of the tunnel was very far at the time." He has, when compared to Alonso, another four years in him as a minimum so we just need to get it done." First, he was penalised with a 10-second penalty for moving out of his grid box at the start. "We are super critical with ourselves and what we need to achieve. "They changed the regulations at the end of last year, lifting the floor up. Red Bull, of course, still have to stop again to put on the hard tyre. According to CEO Zak Brown, it's an electrical issue for the 21-year-old. Do I need to pick up the pace?" And what a drive from Alonso, who bags only the second podium in Aston Martin's history! The Monegasque was running nicely in P3 when his engine gave up on him in the final sector. For Aston Martin to have the second best car on race one...

Lap-by-lap updates: Can Ferrari challenge the supremacy of Red Bull and Max Verstappen in the first race of 2023? Join Daniel Harris.

Lap 13/57 Hamilton pits – Russell wanted to a couple of laps ago – and here comes Alonso, looking to nail him down the straight! Hamilton, meanwhile, is out of the pits in seventh, while Piastri, the next big hope, is in the pit with some kind of issue and he looks to be done for today; what a disaster this weekend has been for him. Otherwise, Gasly is first to pit and presumably will prompt others to do the same. Lap 22/57 Alonso has been pestering his team to find out if action has been taken against the cad who he reckons impeded him on the first lap; his team, of course, don’t want to tell him it’s Stroll, his teammate. Verstappen and Perez are on softs, but Albon is the only other member of the top 10 not using hards. Lap 29/57 Lando Nozza pits again, comes out in 19th, behind Hulkenberg, and he’s another who’s had better days. Lap 16/57 “Just as well I haven’t subscribed to Sky!” sighs Anne Williams. Alonso is back in fifth, and does Hamilton have the power to respond? Lap 49/57 Verstappen’s lead has stayed around 10s for the last bit and I guess he’s no reason to push it. and he attacks down the straight, nails Hamilton on the inside … The gaps between the top four are significant, but Hamilton is 2.363s behind Sainz in fifth, with Alonso 0.596s behind him in sixth … Lap 55/57 Tsunoda is now in DRS range but we focus on Verstappen, who will have fewer more serene evenings.

Max Verstappen cruised to victory at the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday, stamping his authority on the season in the opening race.

“Every race try to lead this midfield and get closer to the top three teams. Let’s start with being in the points. Also a big thank you to the team, what they’ve done over the winter to give us such a quick race car again.” I was also very happy to finally win here in Bahrain. And if eventually we can be in the podium, if we can fight for wins or whatever it comes, you know, that will be a plus.” “I think we have a good race package, of course it will depend a bit race to race but we can definitely fight with this.

Reigning champion Max Verstappen cruises to Bahrain Grand Prix ... (The Guardian)

Red Bull's Max Verstappen won by 12 seconds from his teammate Sergio Pérez while Fernando Alonso was third and Lewis Hamilton fifth.

For Verstappen the win opens his season with the same confident and controlled statement of intent with which he closed out his dominant, championship-winning year in 2022. For Alonso, who drove the socks off the Aston, this was a mighty result, his first podium since Qatar in 2021 with Alpine. Indeed such was his control it would not have been entirely surprising had the screen cut to show the avid gamer indulging in a spot of Super Mario on his steering wheel dash, so unperturbed was he in the clean air of the lead. Indeed for all the anticipation a new season generates, such was his and Red Bull’s authority over this race, it was a pedestrian affair for the leader. Out front, Verstappen won with faultless precision from pole to flag, in complete control at the Sakhir circuit as he put what looks to be a fearsomely competitive car through its paces with ease. The Dutchman’s relentless, clinical win could not be faulted but in his wake was the verve, dash and sheer daredevilry of Fernando Alonso, claiming a mighty third place for Aston Martin and reminding everyone that even at 41 the double world champion remains absolutely gripping to watch.

Bahrain Grand Prix: Can Max be stopped today? In 2023? (Grand Prix 247)

2023 F1 Bahrain Grand Prix report, results, interviews, quotes after the race. Verstappen, Perez, Leclerc, Sainz, Russell, Hamilton, Alonso.

The car is good enough for one-and-a-half-handed, plus big-toe impaired, Lance Stroll (with only a couple of hours of seat time in his new car since his bike crash) to put the Aston eighth on the grid. Fully fit he would for sure be further up than that because the Billionaire’s Son in a good car tends to be a good driver. Credit to the Japanese driver, who was allegedly read the riot act by his Red Bull bosses, as he delivered 14th when it mattered while highly-rated new teammate Nyck de Vries will start his second F1 race from 19th on the grid. To come here and finish on the podium in the first race of the year, it is amazing what Aston Martin did over the winter to have the second best car on race one. Charles Leclerc will give it his best shot, seemingly happy to start third behind Max and could spoil the show if the SF-23 has magic race pace; ditto Carlos Sainz in the other Red car. But they kept him out, while Hamilton was the first of the big hitters to pit on lap 13 at which point Alonso muscled his way past Russell in defence mode, the Aston Martin now in fifth. The F1 World Champs have been oozing confidence since day one of testing, already yesterday, ahead of qualifying, dialing their RB19 in for race pace and still annexing row one after an intriguing session on Saturday. Hardly an ideal start and a harsh reality check for Fred Vasseur after his first race in charge of the Scuderia. Lawrence Stroll’s mega-project is starting to bear fruit if today was anything to go but, a solid car that sticks together even when it bounces off things, and then showed an extremely handy pace late in the race. We had not the best start today and we had to pass on track. You never really know what is going to happen later on in the race so we wanted to have the right tyres in good condition as well. The Driver of the Day without a doubt!
