PSG are once again facing Champions League last-16 elimination without Neymar against Bayern Munich. Can Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe turn things around ...

PSG are without Neymar for the rest of the season, but Kylian Mbappe is fit to start again in a game brimming with intriguing sub-plots. Hosts Bayern have a 1-0 advantage after Kingsley Coman scored the only goal in the first leg in Paris. 2 hours from kickoff: Hello and welcome to the Sporting News' live coverage of a mouth-watering Champions League showdown between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. He comes away from that Bayern set-piece opportunity holding his side and grimacing and that will be that for the away skipper. Kingsley Coman scored the only goal to give Bayern a 1-0 win last time around, as he did famously when the teams met in the 2020 final in Lisbon. The Bayern skipper plays a pass to Goretzka and he leaves it on a plate for Choupo-Moting to sweep home. 1 hr 45 mins from kickoff: And so PSG face their nemesis โ€” the Champions League round of 16, second leg. The PSG goalkeeper gets down very well to beat behind and his teammates deal with the Bayern corner. 15 mins from kickoff: Daft as it might sound for two coaches who are top of their domestic leagues, the loser tonight might have serious questions to answer to his employers come the end of the season. 43rd minute: Messi lifts a delicious-looking ball for Mbappe to run onto but it just skips away from him off the turf and Sommer doesn't try anything smart this time. The striker can't get his shot off and Danilo bundles him out of the picture. Sadio Mane will join him in the Bayern attack shortly.

PSG project fails again as Bayern prove their pedigree (ESPN)

For the fifth time in seven years, PSG's expensively assembled squad has been knocked out in the Champions League last 16, this time by Bayern.

We had a lot of important absentees in the first game and in the second game. Had a golden chance to open the scoring for PSG in the first half, but he wasn't clinical enough with the empty goal gaping. In the end, we deserved to win" [Sadio Mane](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/169797/Sadio-Manรฉ), who replaced Musiala as a late substitute, or [Leroy Sane](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/202641/Leroy-Sanรฉ). Yet he joined PSG in 2021 with the challenge of helping the French team finally win their first Champions League, and for the second successive season, he and PSG have gone out in the round of 16. Right now, though, only Musiala is looking like the kind of world-class player that Bayern used to have in abundance. The Bayern star dominated the midfield and his first-half shoulder charge on Messi summed up how he approached this game. This isn't a vintage Bayern team, but nobody will want to face them in the latter stages simply because they know how to win in this competition. This might just have been the game in which Messi saw his last chance of one more Champions League crown disappear forever. Bayern had to weather an early PSG storm before taking control of this game, but once Choupo-Moting put them ahead on 60 minutes, the tie was in the bag. In continental competition, all PSG's Qatari owners have to show for their mammoth investment in the club is one final appearance. PSG, who lost to Bayern in Lisbon, Portugal, in their only Champions League final appearance to date in 2020, crashed out 3-0 on aggregate after losing the first-leg 1-0 in Paris.

Bayern Munich vs. PSG player ratings: Lionel Messi and Kylian ... (CBSSports.com)

The Germans were far and away the better team and advanced to the Champions League quarterfinal.

Gambled on Marquinhos which did not work. Captain after Marquinhos was forced off, Messi's isolation did not help him. It was a tenacious and risk-taking approach which was working until he got caught in possession and Bayern scored. Saw a great chance thwarted by De Ligt on the line. Underrated, as always, he was reasonably solid for much of the game. He made some great interceptions at the back while he won a few aerial battles at key moments and tested Sommer in the second half. He pulled up short in the warm-up so to go that far was impressive. How did the manager do? Lively and just so smooth, carrying the ball forward to get the attack going. He had a couple of his vtrademark surging runs, but it was his unselfishness to set up Choupo-Moting that cemented his fine performance. A monster at the back. Some curious play at times, especially giving the ball away for a golden chance for Vitinha.

PSG player ratings vs Bayern Munich: Marco Verratti drops a ... (Goal.com)

Paris Saint-Germain supestars Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi failed to step up to the mark in a 2-0 loss at Bayern Munich that sees the Ligue 1 side bow out ...

Bayern added a second in stoppage time, as Serge Gnabry completed a classy counter-attack to boot PSG out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage without really having to try, triumphing 2-0 on the night and 3-0 on aggregate. The visitors enjoyed the best chance of the first half, with Vitinha dispossessing Yann Sommer inside the box before poking his shot towards an open net โ€“ but Matthijs de Ligt slid in brilliantly to divert his effort off the line. Marco Verratti's mistake cued a Bayern Munich clinic as the German side struck twice to send Paris Saint-Germain out of the Champions League.
