Both teams are on the field and the captains introduce the PMs to the playing XIs. This was way outside off Shami, and it goes almost off the pitch! A good length delivery by Shami, wide of off. Rohit dives to his right but the ball goes past his hands. Head hammers it wide of cover for a powerful cover drive! It was going to his pads, Khawaja hammers it between midwicket and square leg, goes to deep square for a four! Labuschagne fails to connect and the bal finds the gap between bat and pad.

Two balls in Shami has found the inside edge of Marnus Labuschagne, and then the wicket. The last half hour has been full of control for India. My suspicion is, they have seen the ball might be ready for reverse.

It’s been great to be able to play spinners and show that we can do it effectively.” Victory in the third Test was only Australia’s second in India since 2004 and Smith believes another to level the series would be an ideal finish. If you can’t see the blog click he was sort of like a sitting duck in many ways. It’s such a tricky balance.” “Looks like probably of the four wickets we’ve seen so far, potentially the flattest on day one. “It’s just playing what’s in front of us really, obviously the scores haven’t been big throughout this whole series. “It’s almost un-Australian. Newcomer Murphy has been economical and got Virat Kohli out three times. So yeah, there might be opportunities for bigger totals on this wicket.” It was wayward start for Indian seamers Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav, who bowled several deliveries down the leg side during their opening spell. Albanese stood alongside Australian captain Steve Smith during the national anthems. How much is it turning?

India v Australia fourth Test LIVE: Australia bat first after PM pageantry (The Sydney Morning Herald)

Australia are aiming to draw the Border-Gavaskar series after a big win in Indore. Follow all the action from day one of play.

Four runs down the ground for Head, a punch through mid-on and a poor attempted dive to stop it by Umesh Yadav. Only a desperate hand to the ball stops a boundary by the man at cover, Head settles for two, before tucking a loose Yadav delivery off his hip to the square leg boundary. Brilliant stop from Gill and a flick at the stumps that would’ve had Khawaja run out with a direct hit. Khawaja doing similar at the other end until he comes down the track to Ashwin and whips off his legs... Ball not exactly flying through to keeper, three or four already getting there on the bounce. Down the wicket to Ashwin, can’t get hold of it properly and toes a catch to Jadeja at mid-on, gone for 32. That was an absolute dolly, Bharat spilling it behind the stumps. Just completely misjudged that simple offering after Head fended at a seaming delivery outside off. Thrashed a cut shot to the man at point before another well-timed boundary through cover. A rank long hop is dragged down by Jadeja and Khawaja helps himself, belting that one behind square. Not much in this pitch and India aren’t helping themselves. Ravindra Jadeja into the attack now after drinks.

Over-by-over report: Play begins with a huge crowd expected at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Join our team of writers for updates.

The third ball of the over is straight and Head finally gets some willow on one, driving powerfully to mid on but a good dive in the field keeps it to a single. He had five runs from his first 26 balls in Indore but then rattled the sabre to finish with 49 from 53 with half a dozen fours and a marvellous six to get Australia home in style. The fourth ball from Shami starts wide, Khawaja gives it a wider berth and ended up being the widest wide of the series, piercing first and second slip and running away to the third man boundary. Head heaves it off his hip pocket and sends it to the rope. 2nd over: Australia 10-0 (Head 0, Khawaja 4) So sundries outscoring batters so far, with four byes, a leg bye and a wide getting Australia to double-figures in the first over. Head takes a single from the second and Khawaja to swipe a four from the fifth. But the short point fielder had stopped it and as he scurried to collect and throw Khawaja realised the danger and swivelled and lunged for home. he seems to have pulled the trigger again, stepping inside the line to hit Shami past the fielder at mid on and all the way to the boundary. And Head does it again to the last, stepping out and taking it off his toes to punch it through cover. Khawaja had stroked a lovely two and he strolled down three paces to the next ball from Ashwin and nonchalantly rolled the wrists to turn it down legside and set off. Instead, he squeezes on the sixth ball, leaning back to a half-tracker and hammering it to the deep square boundary. Shami put it on a good length and Labuschagne stepped out to meet it but it straightened on him and he’s gone.

All to play for in Ahmedabad as fascinating series reaches climax (ESPNcricinfo.com)

The world's largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad is an apt venue given the large stakes on offer for the final Test of a fascinating Border-Gavaskar series.

He was unlucky to nick an unpredictable straight one from Ashwin in the first innings in Delhi but his shot in the second was by his own admission one of the worst of his career. His replacement, Umesh Yadav, bowled a spectacular spell to bring India back into the match in Indore and also produced a batting cameo in the first innings. I understand, they're quite animated, it's just the passion of the game, but that's where my role comes in, to say bhai, relax a little, it's okay if it's at least ending up somewhere near the stumps, but this isn't even hitting the stumps, and some balls were even pitching outside [leg stump], so that was a silly mistake that we made but we hope to correct that in this game and we'll have a small chat regarding this as well, and hopefully we can get it right in this game." He batted superbly in both innings in Nagpur but was beaten on the inside in the first innings and remained not out in the second. "Yes, we accept that we didn't make the right calls in the last game [Making DRS calls can be hard with] especially Jaddu yaar. Australia look the most settled they have been in terms of selection all series. [Delhi](https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/australia-in-india-2022-23-1348637/india-vs-australia-2nd-test-1348653/full-scorecard)masked two periods in that Test where Australia had both a clear ascendency and an opportunity to put the game beyond India's reach. Like Pujara and Khawaja in Indore, he perhaps just needs to camp out and wait for his opportunities to score. For Kohli, it appears to be decision-making and a touch of luck as much as anything else. But both those teams only won two Tests and neither were subjected to the types of extreme surfaces Australia have faced in this series. [confusion around what surface](https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/record-crowd-and-spinning-pitch-add-to-australia-excitement-1362179)will be presented after talk of a [green seamer](https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/rohit-sharma-hints-india-could-request-for-green-pitch-against-australia-in-ahmedabad-test-1361038). The pomp and ceremony surrounding the arrival of the respective Prime Ministers might bolster the crowd to record levels, but the cricket should be enough of a draw.

Usman Khawaja century caps confident performance by Australia (ESPNcricinfo.com)

There have been few instances of visiting batters being comfortable against India in India and this was one of them.

The six false responses in 33 overs in the middle session was the highest control percentage for a visiting side in India in a session of Test cricket in India in the last 10 years. With a 70-over old ball, Shami managed to hold the line to go past Handscomb's edge and send the off stump on a cartwheel. Here, India took the new ball with nine overs to go, and Green took to it. With not much expected from their lower order, Australia had to be watchful in the middle session. Only to lose the gamble with the new ball at the end of the day and hand Australia a slight advantage. Led by Ashwin, India started to turn the screws. This is when India would have been reminded of the A measure of how difficult it was for the bowlers is that India managed to draw only 34 false responses; there were 40 in the first session of the last Test. For long periods, Ashwin managed to keep the batters in check even though he didn't beat the bat. [R Ashwin](http://www.espncricinfo.com/player/ravichandran-ashwin-26421)and [Ravindra Jadeja](http://www.espncricinfo.com/player/ravindra-jadeja-234675)managed one each, and [Axar Patel](http://www.espncricinfo.com/player/axar-patel-554691)provided control in his 12 overs for just 14 runs. Khawaja scored a fine, patient hundred, only the sixth against India in India in the last five years. Khawaja ended unbeaten on 104 having brought up the milestone in the last over of the day, and
