His strength is his play through the off-side, but at the highest level it can also be an area for the opposition bowlers to exploit and the West Indies did that well, hanging deliveries outside off stump and testing his patience. In Rickelton it appeared he’d found a solid partner, but the Lions’ left-hander, who has been in prolific form domestically, found the step up to Test level asks a lot more questions of one’s concentration and technique. Bavuma, who registered “a pair” in the first Test and shouldered arms in the first innings to be trapped lbw, gradually grew into his innings, taking advantage when the West Indies strayed too straight with their lines.

Bavuma was the centre of attention when he was unexpectedly chosen to replace Dean Elgar as captain shortly before this series.

The Windies must have fancied their chances of batting after tea after Jason Holder's heroic 81* ensured South Africa only had a lead of 69. Harmer didn't see out the day, but Bavuma did and when he was clapped off by the crowd and his opponents, it was well-deserved. It was largely thanks to Bavuma's broad and often pressured shoulders. It was from here where Bavuma and Mulder took the game by the scruff of the neck. That meant South Africa was 103/5 after the loss of the wicket at 13:32, leaving Bavuma and the under-pressure Wiaan Mulder (42). The fact that South Africa lost their first wicket off just the third ball of the day was a harbinger of things to come.

South Africa finished day three of the second Test against the West Indies in a strong position after a brilliant innings by skipper Temba Bavuma.

But there was a salute to the dressingroom who were all on their feet in rousing applause. The match situation here at the Wanderers was equally on a knife-edge. He bent down on one knee and laced a wide delivery to the boundary that set off the celebrations. The celebration was not over elaborate. The moment of ecstasy was an anxious wait though. Centurion was a mere aberration. It was only fitting that his first Test century came at Newlands in the city of his birth seven years ago. He was equally confident against off-spinner Roston Chase with a couple of scrumptious cover drivers punctuating his innings. This century was more personal. Not exactly an ideal start and more pertinently just further ammunition for the social media trolls to take aim at their favourite target. That’s when Temba Bavuma last scored a Test century. Johannesburg — Jacob Zuma was still President of South Africa.

He bagged a pair in his first match after taking over the Test captaincy, but has bounced back emphatically.

"After everything that has happened I'm still managing to keep my head up, keep afloat and keep finding a way to move forward." I can stick it to the guys in that one," Bavuma said. Conrad was the one who selected Bavuma as Test captain and Bavuma has acknowledged feeling "fully backed," by his coach. His coach, Shukri Conrad, was asked that too and dead-batted the question saying that Bavuma was not the only player to get a pair. "It's been a long journey and a lot more downs than ups," Bavuma said, maybe remembering that just four months ago, he returned from Australia unable to hold back tears and explain how South Africa had lost to Netherlands at the T20I World Cup. In doing that, that took the pressure off him and it was about the team." He cracked it over the covers and held the pose as the ball crossed the boundary. "You just have to try to absorb and when the opportunity comes, try and release. He's done it before for the Lions, he's done it at county level, now it's just an opportunity for him to do what he's been selected to do," Bavuma said. The prospect of a century only became real once he entered the nineties with a cut shot off Roach that brought a small Friday afternoon crowd to life. "The energy started picking up, I guess in anticipation of the milestone. “My mindset was just to stick to what I was doing. It was an innings of grit and flamboyance at a time when his team needed someone to take control of the match. “I tried to stay within the moment as much as I could. Bavuma played a sumptuous, lofted drive over mid-off, off the bowling of the impressive Alzarri Joseph to bring up the milestone. I’m happy I can [now] stick it to the guys,” he joked. I just kind of went for it,” Bavuma said after the day’s play. “Coming in at five or six, where you’re 20 for four or 10 for two, whatever it is… Bavuma and Mulder took the Proteas from a hazardous position of 103 for five to 206, before Mulder was dismissed for a career-best 42. [Scoring a] hundred wasn’t really the objective, the objective was to get to the end of day’s play, and I guess the hundred just came along the way,” Bavuma said. I definitely wasn’t going to try to hit it on the ground. Bavuma continued calmly and brought up his 50 and the team’s 100 with a classy flick off his pads to the square-leg boundary – as he scored the bulk of the side’s runs. Prior to the start of the Test series against West Indies, Bavuma spoke about his admiration of the Caribbean nation, playing a big role in his love for the sport, and idolising Brian Lara growing up.

Temba Bavuma says he hopes his century in the second Test against the West Indies will allow black cricketers to dream to play for the Proteas.

I am certainly not going to give my wicket away at any point in time. Temba Bavuma's beautiful noise | Cricbuzz.com (Cricbuzz)

It was a long time between Test centuries for Temba Bavuma but it ended on the third evening at the Wanderers.

Me being a black African cricketer allows a lot more black African cricketers and batters to dream and believe that they can also play for the Proteas and have their names entrenched in the history books. But come tomorrow, you've got to put it behind you and look forward to what is in front of you. I keep learning about myself every day in terms of the type of person and cricketer that I am. Other players have to deal with opponents and conditions and the other conceivable challenges of being an international cricketer. I've tried to take everything in my stride and I always keep my chin up, and always stay true to myself. "Playing for the Proteas is about inspiring the next bunch of cricketers. Now I've got a better understanding of myself, of my surroundings; the pressures and the challenges that come with me being in international cricket. Bavuma himself offered a candid take on the moment critique: "I got a ball outside off-stump, and I definitely wasn't going to try to hit it on the ground." Then Bavuma and Simon Harmer put on 71 to bat the Windies out of the match. South Africa were 76/4 when Bavuma came to the crease in Hobart in November 2016. But, for some, the stroke of Bavuma's innings came with a dozen deliveries left in the day. The sun had set low enough over the tall stands and even taller blue gum trees beyond the western boundary to paint deep dark shadows on fully a third of the outfield, indeed encroaching on the pitch.
