New Sharks' Currie Cup coach Joey Mongalo says South Africans should not knock on the quality that's available in the country's domestic competition.

“The Currie Cup is a breeding ground. The Currie Cup is a great product, there is no need for us to look down on the Currie Cup. “I get annoyed when people question the quality of the Currie Cup,” he said.

He reminded how Griquas made a sluggish start but reached the final, how the Pumas lifted the trophy through consistency in selection and how the Cheetahs went from racing certainties to running into a semifinal cul de sac. Most of the starters have URC experience, with Morne van den Berg, Sti Sithole, Ruan Smith and Jaco Visagie among the more experienced. Teams who play with the ball and run it do so as a by-product of mastering the fundamentals.”

Cheetahs boss says Currie Cup 2023 will be of high standard, good ... (Citizen)

The competition will feature eight teams, playing 14 matches each in a double round, home and away. South African rugby fans may not be all that ...

“Griquas are definitely the favourites so hopefully we can put together a better performance this time.” Eight teams will each play 14 matches in a double round, home and away. “I think the competition’s standard is going to be higher than last year. The last time Griquas and the Cheetahs clashed was in May last year in the second round of the competition when Griquas won 46-18 in Kimberley. [URC](https://www.citizen.co.za/tag/united-rugby-championship/) franchises will also use the [Currie Cup](https://www.citizen.co.za/tag/currie-cup/) to feature some of their players and towards the back-end of the competition, once the URC and all the European competitions are finished, you’ll see plenty of big-name players in action in the Currie Cup. “You’ll have teams at full-strength and I’m sure the fans will get involved at that stage.”

'Better mix' for Lions to push for Currie Cup title (Independent Online)

After a disastrous campaign last season, Lions coach Mziwakhe Nkosi says his team are determined to 'go deep' in the Currie Cup this time around.

“It (playing style) will be a hybrid of the two (between URC and Currie Cup), with players going up and down. “Ours is to serve the URC. “This season, the unions have put their heads together and working out how to best manage the demands of the Currie Cup and URC. A guy like Krappie (Van den Berg) is a case in point. Griquas last year weren’t really in the running at Easter, and before you know it, they were in the semis. The pack of forwards is a case in point.

They sport a talented backline but failed to get them in on the action as a unit in Saturday's clash. Dobson will be happy with the defensive effort and how the team gelled in their first game together. The team defended like trojans when Morabe was binned for repeated team infringements. Yes, he missed a couple of attempts at goal, but he slotted some difficult ones from the touchline and contributed 19 points to the winning tally. Conversions: Kade Wolhuter: (5). Pumas begin Currie Cup title defence by humiliating the Bulls at Loftus (Independent Online)

The reigning Currie Cup champions, the Pumas, began the defence of their title with an impressive humiliation of the mighty Blue Bulls at Loftus on Sunday.

Ten minutes later, Mosi capitalised on a Pumas error to snaffle the ball and crash over the whitewash to make it 8-8. The victory will certainly enforce the belief that the Pumas unexpected but fantastic triumph in the tournament last season was no fluke. They were all outplayed by Jimmy Stonehouse’s charges, with flyhalf Tinus de Beer named Player of the Match after he marshalled his backline to devastating effect.

In many ways, it was a statement victory in Pretoria for the men from Mbombela and will have future opponents suitably concerned. Stonehouse, however, would have been most pleased with the desire shown from numbers 1 to 15 and their resolute defence. Andre Fouche was next to get in on the act, rounding off a coast-to-coast passage of play.

Pumas slaughter Bulls in historic Currie Cup romp | SuperSport (SuperSport)

The Airlink Pumas demolished the Vodacom Bulls 15-63 in a one-sided Currie Cup outing at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday.

Their counter-attack, support play, slick hands and ability to keep the ball alive saw them torment the Bulls in the second half. But that was one of the few mistakes the men in pink made. They produced a clinical display perfectly combined with flair in an entertaining half of Round-One rugby, while their breakdown contesting was a standout in the opening half.
