Chelsea take take all three points in fiery WSL clash against ... (Football.London)

It's a big game for the teams battling it out in the top-of-the-table clash with Manchester United fighting to keep the top spot.

But United are starting to regain control of the midfield battle and imposing themselves in the Chelsea half. The whistle has gone for full time and Chelsea have done it. You just knew Sam Kerr was going to get something from the game with threatening efforts early on and will be more than happy to re-claim top spot of the WSL once again. Chelsea have done what comes naturally to them. The half time whistle goes and Chelsea are ahead through another Sam Kerr goal and as it stands, will head to the top of the table. United are scrambling at the back to deny Chelsea a second goal. A feisty but also scrappy game, they've managed to deny Manchester United the win and they go top of the WSL table. Well, its 63% for United and 37% posession for Chelsea BUT there's no way to know who will edge the other out. "United came into the game a point clear at the top of the table but the title holders took control of the race with a huge victory, in a game of few clear-cut chances..." Chelsea rose to the occasion as they took on top-of-the-table Manchester United in the early WSL kick-off on Sunday. In the end, Emma Hayes turned things around to deny United by changing formation and see the Blues go top of the table - now two points clear. Chelsea led from the 23rd minute after Sam Kerr's third attempt on goal finally beat Mary Earps to reach the back of the net and despite less possession, Chelsea made their chances count as they battled United to go top of the WSL table - and succeeded.

Chelsea v Manchester United: Women's Super League – live (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Join Alex Hess for updates as the WSL's top two lock horns at Kingsmeadow.

5 mins: Good feet from Toone buys her a yard to feed the ball down the left to Galton, whose driven cross is cleared. But maybe they won’t need one - Turner misjudges a long ball to leave Kerr latching onto it on the edge of the box. But the loose ball is picked up by Carter, who is roaming freely from left-back, and her pot-shot is blocked by Zelem. The backtracking Blundell gets across and forces the forward to check onto her left foot, and her low drive is again saved by Earps, this time with her trailing feet. The striker watches the ball drop over her right shoulder, brings it down with her chest and lofts a delicate shot over the shoulder of a helpless Earps and into the far corner. Blundell responds in kind by picking up the ball and galloping down United’s left flank but her floated cross is gathered by Berger. 35 mins: United’s first sniff of goal comes after they work the ball down the right and Toone’s first-time finds Russo, 10 yards out but at an angle. 51 mins: Yet another great chance for Kerr, and from exactly the same route as the previous three: a long ball over the top. It’s blocked, but the striker barrels back to reclaim possession and feed Battle, who swings in a nice cross. 64 mins: Kerr finds herself in on goal again when she latches onto lazy pass by Zelem and makes a beeline for the goal. 76 mins: Perisset gets to the byline and chips a hopeful cross into the box which drops perfectly between two defenders and lands at the feet of Sam Kerr. United send on Williams and Thomas for Toone and the ineffective Galton.

Chelsea Women 1-0 Man Utd Women: Sam Kerr stunner moves ... (Sky Sports)

Report as Sam Kerr scores stunning Chelsea opener for her 23rd goal in all competitions this season; Man Utd penalty appeal turned down after Nikita Parris ...

"We've dominated, we've tried to progress so we've come to the champions' home ground and put our stamp on it. Back to the top. The Women's Super League is now Chelsea's to lose, as has been the case for the past four seasons. We knew we were going to be without the ball. "They're two stonewalls but if one of them goes our away then it's a different game. We've been better barring the goal and then some counter-attacks. We had to be structured defensively and we were. Kerr twice got in behind the United defence but was denied by Earps on both occasions with her second, and best, opportunity coming from a perfect Jessie Fleming pass. We've had 63 per cent possession, we've moved Chelsea to only being able to counter-attack and yet we've come away having got into the box twice and they're two penalties. Chelsea, though, did go close when Fleming's miscued cross almost caught out Earps and hit the angle of post and bar. Moments later, Jess Carter arrived late in an aerial duel with Batlle in the area which was again dismissed. They're two stonewalls but if one of them goes our away then it's a different game."

Chelsea 1 United Women 0 (Manchester United)

Marc Skinner's Manchester United Women were edged out by WSL champions Chelsea in a cagey affair at Kingsmeadow.

Mannion crossed dangerously for Russo in one of her first acts, but our no.23’s header across goal couldn’t find a team-mate. It was a similarly cagey start to the second half with the hosts again having the first effort on goal. It was a case of third time lucky for Kerr, who put Chelsea in front after 23 minutes. At the other end, Kerr continued to carry a threat for the hosts, running from one side of the box to the other to unleash a shot that was blocked, and Earps was then quick to smother her heavy touch in front of goal. Marc Skinner’s team enjoyed plenty of early possession, and threatened to find an almost instant opener. Kerr was the target of a Millie Bright ball over the top, and the Chelsea forward opened up her body in search of the far corner, but she placed her shot just wide.
