West Ham welcome Aston Villa to east London on Sunday as David Moyes and the Hammers are embroiled in an unlikely relegation scrap.
QUESTIONABLE: Diego Carlos (achilles), Leander Dendoncker (undisclosed) Villa’s aim for the final months of the season is to finish in the top 10 and maybe, just maybe, secure European qualification. David Moyes insists he isn’t panicking but he understands the frustration of the fans who saw this team finish in the top seven in each of the last two Premier League campaigns and reach the Europa League semifinals last season.
West Ham United will go up vs Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday, hoping to boost their survival chances with a win.
Villa are undoubtedly the better side on current form, but the Hammers are likely to fight tooth and nail for a vital result here. Douglas Luiz will be the defensive midfielder here, and he will look to break up the West Ham play and win the ball back for his side. Watkins has the quality and form to cause all sorts of problems for the home side here. Matty Cash and Lucas Digne are expected to start as the full-backs, and they will look to provide creativity and service from the wide areas. West Ham have a vulnerable defence, and Brighton & Hove Albion managed to tear them apart in the last game. On the other hand, Villa will be looking to finish the season strongly and they are chasing a top-half finish. West Ham are expected to defend deep and hit Aston Villa on the counter. [#avfc]ace Ollie Watkins: "Every day when we are finishing training, he wants to do more exercises and do more at the end of training, with individual coaches. Aston Villa are currently 11th in the standings, and they will be hoping to move into the top half with a victory here. Ben Johnson and Emerson Palmieri are likely to line up as the full-backs. David Moyes’s men are currently 16th in the Premier League table, and they cannot afford to drop points at this stage of the season. And Unai Emery will be hoping to extend that run against a vulnerable West Ham.
Aston Villa have improved markedly under Unai Emery and Warren Ashurst believes they can continue their good away run at struggling West Ham.

Veteran forward Danny Ings is a renowned 'fox in the box' and he swapped Villa Park for London Stadium back in January. Villa have won four of their last five away games, the only exception being a 3-1 loss to champions Manchester City. Boubacar Kamara and Philippe Coutinho will also miss out, whilst Leander Dendoncker may return to the squad.
Brad Cunningham breaks down Sunday's match between West Ham and Aston Villa and then offers up a plus-money betting prediction.
West Ham has the third-highest direct speed and players capable of pressing high and disrupting Aston Villa if they chose to play out of the back. They’ve also played much better at London Stadium than on the road with a +3.9 xGD, while Aston Villa has been poor away from Villa Park this season with a -6.3 xGD. On top of that, Boubacar Kamara is also out and he’s somewhat become a rock in the middle of their midfield with the third-most tackles + interceptions. West Ham is near the bottom of the Premier League in a lot of pressing categories like PPDA, High Turnovers, and they’re even allowing the fourth most final third entries in the Premier League. However, their final third to box entry conversion rate is only 26.67%, which is the third-best mark in the Premier League. Aston Villa secured a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday after getting an own goal in the first half and then playing the final half hour up a man after Cheick Doucouré got sent off.

“That’s the way it is, I can see why you’re asking because we’ve got three and how’s that going to work if it goes into one? “I don’t think we held the ball up well enough [against Larnaca]. The Italian also went through a goal drought himself at one stage, failing to find the net in ten consecutive appearances heading towards the January transfer window. It’s not easy to work out who’s not going to play and who is going to play but the way we’ve been playing, we’re needing to find a way to get better in many aspects. “We brought Gianluca in to give Antonio competition but then Gianluca had an injury and we weren’t scoring, we couldn’t get any goals from any of them, so we went down the route of getting someone tried and tested,” Moyes told football.london after West Ham claimed a 2-0 win in Cyprus. Gianluca Scamacca, who the Hammers signed for £30.5million from Sassuolo in the summer, has seven for the season, but he has also only scored three times in the 16 Premier League games he has featured.
Coming off of a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace, Aston Villa travel to London to tackle Declan Rice and a relegation beleaguered West Ham United.
You could bench Ramsey and start Emi on the left to make room for two up top, but I like Emi at the 10. That gives us a midfield of Douglas Luiz and Calum Chambers, with Jacob Ramsey to their right and John McGinn to their left. Another option would be to slide John McGinn over to the holding position, put Jacob Ramsey on the right where McGinn was, and play Emi Buendia on the left. The Hammers recent form is sluggish, dropping two out of the last three league matches (0-4 away to Brighton and Hove Albion, a 4-0 London Stadium win over Nottingham Forest, and a 0-2 loss at the creatively named [Tottenham Hotspur](https://cartilagefreecaptain.sbnation.com) Stadium). The easiest solution is to replace a holding midfielder with another holding midfielder, that being Calum Chambers. It would be all good and well moving on to this week if not for the swashbuckling talents of Cheick Doucoure.

There are doubts over whether Lucas Paqueta, Michail Antonio and Flynn Downes will be included in the matchday squad. The Hammers and the Villans clash in the Prem! Check our Premier League odds with this West Ham-Aston Villa prediction and pick.
West Ham will be determined to improve their 5-2-5 home record this season, which is the 13th-best mark in the league. While the Villans had just 11 goals made and 19 goals conceded in their travels, they still have a better away record than Liverpool, Brentford, and Leicester City. Getting the three points here will propel West Ham out of relegation, with Bournemouth replacing the Hammers in the bottom three. This was just the second back-to-back victory for Villa. The Villans currently have the ninth-best away record with a 4-2-6 standing in 12 games played. Aston Villa is now seven spots and 11 points ahead of today’s hosts, as well as Leeds and Southampton. In the Prem, the Hammers were the victims to a 4-0 hammering by Brighton & Hove Albion. Moyes will have to improve their game averages of 12.8 total shots, 5.2 corners, and 43.6% ball possession, especially against a Villa side that is dominant in the offense. (AE) What a move this would be for a Chelsea team already loaded with attackers, just the latest sign that no one besides (probably) Kai Havertz and Mason Mount are safe in their status with Thomas Tuchel’s Blues. This time around, Lukaku scored 15 goals in 44 appearances (all competitions – 8 in 26 in the Premier League), bringing his Chelsea career total to 15 goals. His quality is clear for all to see and he would slot in well to the 3-4-2-1 system and is very comfortable on the ball and coming out of the back to start attacks. It is reported (below) that Chelsea will pay the Norwegian side $12.7 million for Fofana. The focus at Chelsea will likely now be on selling players and they will have to move on a lot of fringe players to offset this huge spending spree. This asks more questions of Mohamed Salah, who is entering the final year of his deal at Anfield (NM). OUT: Lukasz Fabianski (face) (JPW) QUESTIONABLE: Diego Carlos (achilles), Leander Dendoncker (undisclosed) Joe Gomez might not be a first- (or second-) choice center back for Liverpool anymore, with Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip both out-appearing him last season, but the 25-year-old is keen to continue his seven-year stay an Anfield. They haven’t been shy about splashing the cash on players needed in key areas of the pitch in the past (Virgil van Dijk and Alisson prove that) and Fernandez slots into that category as Liverpool’s midfield needs strengthening and his signing would allow them to be pretty settled for the next four to five years.

The Senegal star is inching closer to his move to Bayern Munich as he is in Bavaria for his medical. With Sadio Mane looking to be on his way out and question marks over the future of Mohamed Salah, Klopp may need to strengthen this attack this summer. Per the report, Liverpool will pay Benfica a guaranteed $84 million and could pay up to another $21 million in add-ons. Liverpool don’t mess around once they identify a player they want to sign and Nunez ticks all of the boxes Jurgen Klopp wants from a striker. This is a surprising move by Liverpool but it slots in superbly with their recruitment model and Gakpo seems to be the kind of player who is ready to break out in a big way and score 20 plus goals a season in the Premier League. Takumi Minamino’s time at Anfield appears to be over after Liverpool and Monaco reportedly agreed a transfer fee for the 27-year-old Japan international. I have got more to learn and the time to do that. The expansion side have had a great start to life in MLS and adding a player of Firmino’s quality would be a major coup and give them a huge boost but you would think a huge number of MLS sides would be interested in signing Firmino. In my eyes, probably one of the best — if not the best — clubs in the world at the minute. It certainly looks like Klopp bet on a handful of mainstays to hold off Father Time for one more season and Father Time was like, “Nah.” And being asked about transfers by journalists might be annoying, but it sure isn’t the worst job on Earth, is it? He’s not on the same level as Barella in ball movement but he’s very good at creating shots and is a harder tackler and defensive presence than Barella. You have to think he would score plenty of goals and be a star man in STL and there is a strong connection with the new MLS side as their current sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel was with Firmino in Germany at Hoffenheim.

He added: "It was a missed opportunity that we didn't get the second goal and the performance in the second half probably warranted it. We kept the focus and the belief to come back. We like his hold-up play, he is really good at it but we haven't seen it as much in the work we've been doing." "The biggest thing was to get a result on Thursday [in the Europa Conference League]. We played a good game and had many chances but just couldn't score. West Ham manager David Moyes told Sky Sports: "The performance was much improved in the second half. He is demanding and critical of himself and listening a lot." We controlled the game more in the first half but they pushed us and had chances. "The result is positive. West Ham substitute Maxwel Cornet had a glorious chance to win the game in stoppage-time but attempted a bizarre step over before firing straight at Martinez. Villa began to tail off after an hour and had to rely on their goalkeeper again as he tipped over a long-range effort from Benrahma cutting in from the left. But West Ham responded quickly from the penalty spot after Bailey was penalised for a soft challenge on Paqueta.
Ollie Watkins put Villa in front with an industrious and clever header of an Alex Moreno cross, but Said Benrahma made the most of a silly Leon Bailey foul to ...
Losing Boubacar Kamara to injury is a blow as his form alongside Douglas Luiz is a big reason behind Villa’s upturn in results. That was back at the start of October. Villa exits the game in 11th with 35 points. Emiliano Martinez has been excellent in goal, while Tyrone Mings is also back to his best at the back. Declan Rice is doing his best to drive them on from midfield but defensive mistakes behind him are costing West Ham big time. West Ham and Aston Villa combined for nearly 30 shots but the hosts will feel aggrieved not to have found a winner in a 1-1 draw at the London Stadium on Sunday.
Saïd Benrahma's penalty cancelled out Ollie Watkins's opening goal as struggling West Ham were held to a 1-1 draw at home against Aston Villa.
A lively Benrahma was the chief threat, drawing a couple of excellent saves from Martínez. “But it was a very soft penalty.” They were light in midfield without Boubacar Kamara, forcing Emery to start Leon Bailey on the right and move John McGinn into a deeper role, and West Ham saw vulnerabilities. The attacking angles were less predictable here but the aim was awry. After 25 minutes the winger won and took a corner. Cornet would have to wait until four minutes from time and Gianluca Scamacca, the £35.5m Italy striker, was not given a chance to show whether he could flourish alongside Danny Ings, who was poor against his former side. “The moment we were in control was when we could have scored the second goal,” Emery said. Douglas Luiz strolled through midfield, Kehrer stood off Moreno and Aguerd lost Watkins, who punished the West Ham defence by glancing a bouncing header past Alphonse Areola. It was not until the 77th minute that he called on Fornals. They struck out of nothing in the 17th minute, Álex Moreno advancing from left-back and finding Watkins with a gorgeous whipped cross. But this was still a missed opportunity. West Ham did not look like a team who are about to embark on a triumphant march to safety.
West Ham United missed the chance to move two points clear of the relegation zone on Sunday afternoon with a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa and here are the ...
The biggest question over the Italian came against Villa when Ings was taken off with five minutes to go, having touched the ball just ten times in the game. He bought the ball down with a sublime touch and then bought himself a penalty after contact from Leon Bailey, with Benrahma making no mistake when firing into the roof of the net, his eighth goal of the season in all competitions. There were large parts of the performance to be pleased about, many chances created but nothing clinical. Villa’s lead was cancelled out nine minutes later by Benrahma, but a lot of it came from the good work of Lucas Paqueta. Benrahma has been West Ham’s most consistent performer in terms of direct goal contributions this season, but the game also highlighted the inconsistencies that are in his game, and while he has been criticised by Moyes in the past. Somehow, his effort from close-range was denied by Alphonse Areola, on his home Premier League debut. Benrahma took his penalty superbly and was one of West Ham’s standout players in the draw, but considering the number of chances, the Algerian international will have hoped to have scored at least two, if not more. Moyes said that Scamacca’ decline in physical data has led to his sudden exodus out of the side, adding that Cornet was preferred due to his pace, which while it did not lead to a late winner, showed a few signs of promise, had he managed to stay onside. Scamacca was set to come on in second half stoppage-time, warming up and even being stood in the dugout in his playing shirt, awaiting the chance to come on, but instead, was left sat awaiting minutes that never came. West Ham may have got out of the relegation zone, albeit via goal difference, but they could and should be two points clear, knowing that by the time they next play in the league at home to bottom club Southampton in 20 days’ time, West Ham will certainly be back in the relegation zone, if not at the foot of the table before kick-off. After the game, Moyes said that he made the decision for two reasons, for fresh legs and to try and to avoid the risk of Paqueta getting another yellow card. That penalty would prove to be the start of Benrahma’s flurry of shots, one of ten he would go on to have in the game.
Latest Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive reports on the wider media reaction to London Stadium stalemate and what it means for both clubs.
West Ham started the day in the bottom three after Bournemouth’s shock win over Liverpool. They were light in midfield without Boubacar Kamara, forcing Emery to start Leon Bailey on the right and move John McGinn into a deeper role, and West Ham saw vulnerabilities. They knew a victory would lift them 14th, but they were unable to find a winner with Danny Ings drawing a blank against his old club. Immediately ahead of that group sit Villa, doubtless frustrated to be in one of those mid-table ‘nothing’ positions but out of danger at least. The point that saw Villa move to within two of Chelsea in 10th, while West Ham are hovering above the drop zone on goal difference. Villa, 11 points above the bottom three, were lax in possession at times. Bowen and Benrahma are joint top league scorers while summer signing Gianluca Scamacca has three and Danny Ings, recruited in January, has two. Douglas Luiz strolled through midfield, Kehrer stood off Moreno and Aguerd lost Watkins, who punished the West Ham defence by glancing a bouncing header past Alphonse Areola. But the Hammers were soon back on level terms after Leon Bailey conceded a first-half penalty was converted by Said Benrahma. They struck out of nothing in the 17th minute, Álex Moreno advancing from left-back and finding Watkins with a gorgeous whipped cross. Ings played up front here and was anonymous. “The moment we were in control was when we could have scored the second goal,” Emery said.
