Ke Huy Quan: From forgotten child star to Oscars hero (BBC News)

He was a child star in the 1980s, but gave up on acting when Hollywood gave up on him.

"Spielberg was the first person to put an Asian face in a Hollywood blockbuster," he said. "If you were to take 100 scripts, there was a high probability that none of them would feature any meaningful Asian characters. On paper, the film is a tough sell. Three weeks later, Quan was on his way to Sri Lanka to start shooting the film. But as the 90s wore on, the offers began to dwindle. I wanted to be up there along with my fellow Asian actors. Quan didn't intend to audition, but the casting director suggested "My journey started on a boat. They would make fun of us when we were in school. An agent friend agreed to represent him - and two weeks later Quan received a call about Everything Everywhere All at Once. Ma, I just won an Oscar!" Now he has made a remarkable comeback by winning an Oscar.

'It took courage to give voice to this dream I'd had, a dream I had to walk away from, and I didn't think it would find its way back'

It took courage to give voice to this dream I’d had, a dream I had to walk away from, and I didn’t think it would find its way back.” His mother and three siblings went to Malaysia, and the family were reunited when they emigrated to the US in 1979. “I cried because it was such a beautiful movie, but I also cried for a different reason – I had serious FOMO [fear of missing out]. He added: “Dreams are something you have to believe in. To all of you out there, please keep your dreams alive. “If you were to take 100 scripts, there was a high probability that none of them would feature any meaningful Asian characters. However as he grew up, suitable roles never materialised and he worked behind the scenes as a stunt co-ordinator and assistant director. Three weeks later, Quan was on his way to Sri Lanka to start shooting the film. But his life was about to change. Luckily, it wasn’t the end of his story. This is the American dream.” He was overcome with emotion at the awards ceremony, saying: “My mom is 84 years old and she is at home watching.

Director Steven Spielberg took a shine to 12-year-old Quan – his brother was actually the one auditioning – and when he set up an improv session with Quan and Ford playing out the scene in which Short Round accuses Jones of cheating at a game of cards, it created such on-screen magic, that it turned out being "in the finished film, played out round the campfire.” He looked at me and said: ‘Are you Short Round?’ I was immediately transported back to when I was a little kid. I said: ‘Yes, Indy.’ He said: ‘Come here,’ and gave me a big hug.” [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/nov/14/ke-huy-quan-goonies-indiana-jones-asian-actors-everything-everywhere-all-at-once): “It was one of the happiest times of my life”.
