“In the long-term, by 2028 Rand Water is planning to invest R28 billion by constructing additional storage reservoirs for Meredale, Daleside, Klipfontein, Germiston, Hartebeeshook, Bronberg, Brakpan and Selcourt. The total treatment for Zuilerbosch will therefore be 4400 ml/pd by 2025. Out of this 3968 ml/pd, an estimated 45% is lost within municipalities’ systems as Non-Revenue Water, yet the international norm should be 15% and below. “Rand Water is also increasing the treatment capacity at Zuikerbosch from 3800 Ml/day by a further 600 Ml/day between 2023 and 2025. Gauteng is South Africa and the continent’s economic hub with at least 16.1 million residents. Of the additional 600 ml/pd, in June 2023, Rand Water will commission 150 ml/pd while 300ml/pd will come in 2024 and the 150 ml/pd in 2025.

Gauteng water woes: Rand Water to invest R28 bn towards ... (Jacaranda FM)

Rand Water is set to invest nearly R30 billion to increase its storage capacity of treated water by building an additional 12 reservoirs by 2028.

Once completed, this multi-billion-rand project between the two countries promises to transfer up to 485 million cubic meters /annum of water into the integrated Vaal water system. "In Gauteng, there are unplanned human settlement patterns that are on the increase resulting in unmetered water consumption. “Out of this 3968 ml per day, an estimated 45% is lost within municipalities’ systems as non-Revenue Water, yet the international norm should be 15% and below. “By 2028 Rand Water is planning to invest R28 billion by constructing additional storage reservoirs for Meredale, Daleside, Klipfontein, Germiston, Hartebeeshook, Bronberg, Brakpan, and Selcout. According to the report, the current water demand for Gauteng is 4563 megalitres per day while Rand Water is currently able to supply 4431 ml per day, leaving a shortfall of 9% per day. By 2028, Rand Water would have increased its storage capacity of treated water from the current number of reservoirs from 60 to 72 while its storage capacity from 6100Ml/day to 7630Ml/day,” said Mchunu.

Mchunu said that the department was yet to sign a memorandum of understanding with municipalities on interventions to make the water sector efficient and sustainable. He said that in the short term, Rand Water had commissioned a reservoir in Vlakfontein, which was expected to contribute an additional 210 megalitres of water a day, aimed at increasing water security for parts of Ekurhuleni and Tshwane. Mchunu said that this was one of the contributing factors to the high rates of water consumption in the province, as unregulated human settlements erected on vacant land led to illegal water connections.

While Gauteng uses 4 563 megalitres of water a day, Rand Water is only able to supply 4 431 megalitres/pd.

The department will develop a project dashboard and co-ordinate annual review progress meetings on implementation of these measures and their impact on water supply in Gauteng, to measure reduction in losses and infrastructure upgrade to address future water challenges," Mchunu said. "We do intend to partner with the private sector through our water partnerships office, with the aim of jointly investing in the water sector and ensuring water sustainability for the province." This was announced on Tuesday by Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu at a media briefing on the state of water services in Gauteng and interventions to solve the provision of services to communities.
