Here's the Difference Between Diesel and Gasoline (The Drive)

Diesel engines don't have any spark plugs, as the combustion of the air/fuel mixture is caused by compression. The fact that diesel engines have much higher ...

Diesel engines are more efficient, but unfortunately, diesel often costs more than gasoline in the U.S. Considering the reliability and efficiency of diesel engines, it might seem like a no-brainer that they’re also cheaper to own than gasoline engines. Yes, diesel engines generally last considerably longer than gasoline engines, but they’re more expensive to maintain. Diesel engines are considered to be more reliable than gasoline engines. The low-rpm performance and higher compression ratio mean that diesel engines are generally around 20% more efficient than gasoline engines. As mentioned, diesel is denser than gasoline, which gives it the consistency of light oil. The higher-compression ratio of diesel engines leads to better thermal efficiency and directly affects a vehicle’s fuel efficiency. The fact that diesel engines have much higher compression ratios than gasoline engines is what makes this possible. Since gasoline engines produce more horsepower than diesel engines at higher rpm, they’re better suited to lightweight vehicles. The pistons in diesel engines compress air, which raises the temperature of the combustion chamber. So, what are the main differences between the two most popular fuel sources in the world, and is it time for you to make the switch? This fuel is clear with a light-green hue, which becomes darker as the diesel degrades.

To contain the plume, Colonial has installed hydraulic control wells. Since the accident, Colonial has been pumping contaminated groundwater from the site and hauling it away for disposal. The groundwater contains very high levels of benzene, a known carcinogen, and other toxic contaminants related to petroleum products: toluene, xylene, naphthalene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAH.

Premium gasoline at the pump is getting more expensive (The Spokesman-Review)

U.S. and European refiners are scrambling to get enough octane to make high-quality gasoline. There are several potential reasons for the shortfall, including ...

Because of the lost capacity, there aren’t enough reformer units to upgrade low-octane naphtha, to raise its octane levels for use in making premium gasoline. “Meeting lower sulfur requirements comes at the expense of octane levels, which likely contributed to soaring prices for high octane blending components,” they said in a recent note. The true effects of the regulations started to become clear last year as gasoline consumption recovered, according to analysts at Bank of America. Compliance with the rules requires more severe hydrotreating of naphtha and gasoline during refining. The loss of these Russian feedstocks is critical for gasoline markets this year, according to consultant Energy Aspects. Octane itself is a hydrocarbon, produced in the refining of crude oil, though consumers generally know about it through the so-called octane rating for gasoline.
