"John Wick: Chapter 4" Cinematographer Dan Laustsen on the ... (Motion Picture Association)

Cinematographer Dan Luastsen has become one of the key figures in the Wick universe, and he says "Chapter 4" is the biggest & most beautiful.

He goes from the darkness into the sunrise in the desert at the beginning of the movie and then into the sunshine at the end of the movie. In capturing the action, a Spidercam was deployed, and lighting was mapped out to shoot 360 degrees. Laustsen says action scenes were “played as wide as they could” with dolly, crane, and Steadicam framing the bulk of the imagery while handheld was used sparingly. For director Chad Stahelski’s John Wick: Chapter 4, Laustsen says that the creative team’s eyes were on making the latest installment “bigger, crazier, and more beautiful.” “We wanted to make more powerful images of the characters, especially Keanu,” Laustsen says. Japan puts the Osaka Continental Hotel center stage – the assassin safe haven akin to the Moroccan Continental in Chapter 3 and New York Continental from the first two films. Thematically tying John Wick’s character arc to the simmering story is light from the sun, which starts and ends the movie. Greens and ambers subliminally connected each location in the story. In one scene, Wick is chasing down enemies on horseback, his black suit creating a surrealist contrast in the saturated desert environment. When you have a leading actor who says let’s go for it, it’s such a help.” Those efforts have carried over to the John Wick franchise, which Laustsen began lensing back in Chapter 2, with an atmospheric vigor that punctuates the onslaught of action through an ethereal and deliberate touch. Color palettes found ground through collaborative efforts with production designer Kevin Kavanaugh (The Dark Knight Rises, Nightcrawler), who also has been on the series since Chapter 2. You feel that bump in movies all the time because they were doing it in pieces and not seeing it as a whole. Part of the reason “John Wick: Chapter 4” originally had and still has a massive runtime is because it greatly expands the world of its title character and introduces a handful of new supporting characters that all get their moment to shine, from Rina Sawayama’s Akira to Shamier Anderson’s mysterious Mr. It was just a matter of sifting out what we didn’t need.” “You just compress, compress, compress,” the editor added about getting the three-hour-and-45-minute cut down to 169 minutes. “Our first cut was three hours and 45 minutes, and it felt like three hours and 45 minutes. 'John Wick: Chapter 4' Running Time: Why It's Almost 3 Hours (IndieWire)

"John Wick: Chapter 4" runs 169 minutes, and director Chad Stahelski and editor Nathan Orloff explain why every minute was necessary.

The last thing you want to do is treat it as a bunch of parts.” Once again, Stahelski — who’s as influenced by directors of musicals like Bob Fosse and Stanley Donen as he is by Sergio Leone — finds the analogy he’s looking for in music: “It’s not a piece of the song, it’s the whole song that makes you rock out.” Sometimes Stahelski and Orloff found that cutting a scene too short made the movie feel longer because it wasn’t the correct rhythm, which led to many, many viewings of the entire film to figure out the right balance. If the stripped-down original was Stahelski’s “A Fistful of Dollars” and the second and third installments expanded the “John Wick” universe in a manner comparable to “For a Few Dollars More,” “ [John Wick: Chapter 4](https://www.indiewire.com/t/john-wick-chapter-4/)” is Stahelski’s “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,” the movie that takes “John Wick” into the realm of the epic. “You’ll never know if a five-minute car scene or a 10-minute car scene is good until you watch the whole movie,” Stahelski said. “You just compress, compress, compress,” Orloff said. Orloff noted that there was a lot of experimentation in the movie’s first half to figure out how much time to spend on the supporting characters while always bringing the story back to John Wick.

Box office preview: John Wick: Chapter 4 should dominate (Goldderby)

The 4th installment of the franchise that began in 2014 continues Wick's attempts to survive against the assassins sent by the High Table.

Although Reeves has a career that has spanned over 40 years ago, he seems to be having a bit of a Renaissance in recent years due to “Wick” and other projects, which has helped lead to long-delayed installments of the “Matrix” and “Bill and Ted” franchises. Also opening in an unknown number of theaters (but probably a few hundred across the country) is Zach Braff’s new drama, “A Good Person,” starring Florence Pugh, Morgan Freeman and Molly Shannon. Reviews will hit sometime on Wednesday, but presumably, they will be pretty good, since it’s a solid drama with great performances and possibly Braff’s best film since his breakout debut, “Garden State,” in 2004. (There have been rumors that they might even be a sequel to Keanu’s 2004 movie, “Constantine,” despite the DC Universe having gone in so many different directions since then.) Even that fantastic showing couldn’t prepare anyone for 2019’s “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” which made as much domestically as the previous movie made globally, opening with $56.8 million in a plum summer release. It also adds the like of martial arts stars Donnie Yen and Scott Adkins, as well as Shamier Anderson (“Bruiser”), Hiroyuki Sanada (“Bullet Train”) and pop star Rina Sawayama, with existing characters played by Ian McShane, Laurence Fishburne and the late Lance Reddick returning from previous chapters.

Box Office: 'John Wick 4' Aims for $70 Million Opening Weekend (Variety)

"John Wick: Chapter 4" is aiming to set a new franchise record at the box office.

Except for “Shazam: Fury of the Gods,” it’s been a standout March at the box office, with new entries of “Scream” and “Creed” also establishing opening weekend benchmarks in their respective series. “John Wick 4” is the only new nationwide release, so it’ll have no problem overtaking “Shazam 2” as the No. As long as momentum sustains, “Chapter 4” hopes to become the biggest earner of the four by the time it leaves theaters. It cost more than $100 million to produce, giving it the highest price tag in the series. “Chapter 4,” earning some of the best reviews of the already well-received pack, should continue the trend. [Keanu Reeves](https://variety.com/t/keanu-reeves/) as a legendary assassin, looks to collect a mighty $65 million to $70 million from 3,800 North American theaters over the weekend.

ANDERSON: Not just because I have a dog in this version, but the John Wick 3 with Halle Berry, that dog sequence? So can you both talk a little bit about the dog being a huge part of the franchise, and you get it this time, and getting to fight Donnie? Do I get a spinoff?” You know, “Something?” But it's really great, and the Donnie Yen of it, I’ll let Hiro speak on that, but I got to watch those guys fight, which is legendary. And the experience is one thing, working with a Belgian Malinois, and how incredibly skilled they are and learning that process, and then the other side of it, the responsibility of having a dog in this film and what that holds and what that means to everybody. What does it mean to both of you to be part of a franchise like this that is so beloved to so many people around the world? So that's the biggest thing, but I’m so happy to be a part of the series.

Movie Review: 'John Wick: Chapter 4' is longer, bloodier and better ... (The Spokesman-Review)

Is "John Wick: Chapter 4" the best John Wick movie in the franchise, as early reviews suggest? Quite possibly.

If you are also an acolyte in the church of chopsocky, samurai swordplay and gunslinging gangsters, you could do a lot worse than “John Wick: Chapter 4.” In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to do better. As “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” gets underway, John is being hounded by a lethal Adjudicator (Asia Kate Dillon), along with nearly every hired gun in the world, having been declared “excommunicado,” or excommunicated, for the murder of Santino D’Antonio on the “sanctified” grounds of a New York City hotel catering exclusively to killers. The point is, these plots are all the same, or at least similar: John wants someone dead, and someone – or a lot of someones – wants him dead in return. The most talked-about fight scenes will surely be two staged in Paris: the first taking place in the traffic roundabout encircling the Arc de Triomphe, known as the Étoile, or star, for its 12 radiating avenues; the second taking place on the 222 steps of the Rue Foyatier leading up to the Sacré-Coeur cathedral, where a climactic duel takes place at dawn between John and the Marquis. They might even assume that it is great (and it is pretty great) by the same metric that “The Quiet Girl” is great. Over time, the mix of fight and flight has shifted, with John fully becoming the quarry by the end of “John Wick: Chapter 2,” in the wake of his killing of a Neapolitan Mafioso (Riccardo Scamarcio).

What you're going to see in that more is you're going to see her learning to adapt to her surroundings, and her environments. So you adapt his skill set, and you adapt the use of the gun and the cane, and everything like that to give you some really cool moments and choreography. [you worked on Batgirl](https://screenrant.com/batman-brave-bold-movie-batgirl-leslie-grace/) as a stunt coordinator, and we're not going to see that movie. And in a typical car chase, you cut to the actor, and then you have stunt doubles, and you cut to the actor. And we're just going to add a little horse. And then you have Donnie, his character has to get to the top of the stairs. You guys have worked with Keanu in some of the previous installments of John Wick. It's a gift to any stunt coordinator that comes in and our fight team, like Jeremy Moranes, our amazing fight coordinator on that. And he started training Keanu and he goes, "Whoa, maybe we can do this, and maybe we can do that." And of course the story, as Chad has said, is taking inspiration from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. He wanted to do this thing, and then he says, "Oh, I want to do it at the Arc de Triomphe." Once we got to Berlin, we found a space, and then we started training different, little smaller pieces, where he drifts the car, and he picks up the gun, and does some things that we weren't even sure he could do.

The nearly three-hour fairy tale of firearms that is “John Wick: Chapter 4” is a sprawling, Shakespearean orgy of violence, a salute to stunt choreographers ...

We like to watch him work — a skill he employs almost regretfully — and “John Wick: Chapter 4” is a stunningly beautiful, if a bit narratively sludgy, climax for America’s favorite assassin. The film later moves on to Berlin, and then Paris, as John decides to challenge the Marquis to a duel. There’s an unfortunate sequence of Scott Adkins in a fat suit as a Berlin-based heavy who roundhouse kicks John Wick all over a brutalist nightclub. The new leader of the High Table, the preening, poncy Marquis (an excellent Bill Skarsgard) hasn’t just put out a huge bounty on Wick’s head, he’s also compelled the Zatoichi-like blind swordsman Caine (an even more excellent Donnie Yen) to kill John Wick in exchange for protecting his daughter. “John Wick: Chapter 4” is structured roughly in three parts set in different locations across the globe. Reeves seems aware that he is merely a vessel for violence here, and though the script, by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch, is laden with lore surrounding the Continental Hotel for assassins (gamely delivered by Clancy Brown), feel free to simply let it wash over you.

Review: Keanu Reeves returns in violent, fun (and long) 'John Wick ... (Akron Beacon Journal)

John Wick must deal with multiple foes in 'Chapter 4.' If the formula works, why change it?

It would be sufficient if the Marquis and Caine by proxy were the only problems Wick faced, but he’s a wanted man and the High Table doesn’t care who takes him out. Needless to say, Wick needs all the friends he can get, but a master of martial arts working to hunt him down certainly isn’t something he needs. The writers certainly know how to write for Reeves’ earnest, deadpan delivery. Stahelski and his team of writers — Shay Hatten, Michael Finch and Derek Kolstad — at least make the effort to add new elements that pay off handsomely. A threadbare plot accentuated by stylized violence and a tonally perfect performance by Reeves have contributed to Wick’s assassin tale of vicious, escapist fun. To some, however, that’s 20 to 25 minutes of extra fun.

John Wick: Chapter 4 Review: Better Than Ever with Keanu Reeves ... (Den of Geek)

Four movies in, John Wick star Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski are still finding ways to surprise us.

It’s true that John, his allies, and his enemies are operating just one level below that of superheroes these days (he’s been wearing Kevlar suits since the second film), and that it takes a lot to keep them down, which is best represented in a genuinely hilarious scene that finds John doggedly trying to climb hundreds of steps to reach a plaza—only to be sent tumbling down. One is a fringe assassin known only as The Tracker (Shamier Anderson), whose old-school tactics and canine companion belie a laser-like focus on claiming the bounty, while the other is Caine (Donnie Yen), an old friend of John’s who’s been forced back into the High Table’s employ via threats to his daughter. As for their leading man, even after his own long career, Reeves may not have quite the range and depth of these legendary actors, but there’s a sense here that he’s always working on upping his game, and the script gives him plenty of moments to do just that. John Wick: Chapter 4 is a frequently astonishing epic that moves the story forward from the [relative wheel-spinning of Chapter 3](https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/john-wick-chapter-3-review/), using its whopping two-hour-and-49-minute runtime to deliver more stunning action, a heavier dose of humor, and even some moments of reflection and character development that may make the pace flag a little but ultimately provide satisfaction. [the John Wick franchise](https://www.denofgeek.com/john-wick/): the odd-numbered films have never fully impressed us, while the even-numbered [John Wick: Chapter 2](https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/john-wick-2-review/) was a dazzling tour de force that elevated the series to a whole new level of action filmmaking. But first, there’s the story at hand to get through, which opens with the bounty on John’s head continuing to rise as the High Table—the sort of Illuminati of crime organizations around the world—still wants our hero dead for breaking its rules and doing his best to wrest his freedom from their reign.

'John Wick: Chapter 4' review: Action cinema's greatest hits (Rappler)

'John Wick: Chapter 4' doesn't feel like the fourth film of a franchise; it's an exclamation point, a high watermark for action cinema as a whole.

The totality of the filmmaking, choreography, and stunt performances creates a singular energy that is both sweeping and energizing, allowing the audience to vicariously experience the god-like feats of Keanu Reeves on screen. And towards the end, with all eyes transfixed on the screen, I, along with the audience, held our collective breath, the palpable silence lingering like a pin poised to drop, the anticipation practically killing us. He shuts that person up and continues on to the next action set-piece. He is an every-man, an embodiment of all the action icons all the way from the early heydays of action films up until the present. Chapter 4 begins with a regime change in the ruthless criminal underworld of the High Table. Lawrence of Arabia, Jurassic Park, Mission Impossible, Daredevil, The Matrix, Kill Bill, Police Story, Enter The Dragon – just a few of the films that John Wick: Chapter 4 lovingly pays homage to in its almost three-hour masterclass on visual kineticism and balletic gun-fu choreography.

John Wick Chapter 4 review: The biggest, bloodiest, most personal (Hindustan Times)

John Wick Chapter 4 review: Keanu Reeves stars is what is likely the best instalment of an already sparkling action franchise. | Hollywood.

Time and again, the John Wick movies prove that, in the right hands, action is an art form. It’s the same exchange we got in Chapter 3 between John and The Elder in the desert. With John Wick: Chapter Four, stuntman-turned-director Chad Stahelski cements the legacy of this series as among the purest, most stylish action movies ever made. There’s a breathtaking top-angle one-take sequence through an apartment building and a final heart-stopping fight sequence on the steps of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. Every element lives in service of the action. The last forty minutes in particular, set in Paris, is pure bravura bloodshed with two of the finest hand-to-hand set pieces I’ve seen in recent memory. But he seems to have little purpose here aside from making himself known to us and no-doubt showing up in future instalments of this expanding universe (they’ve already greenlit a spin-off show called The Continental and a spin-off movie called The Ballerina starring Ana de Armas). Is it simply that he’s the most gifted killer in a world full of them? The end of the last movie saw John decide to go back on his agreement with The Table to side with Winston. John inspires compassion in a world that demands the lack of it. The Table has sent a new top-dog general to end the John Wick epidemic and the threat he poses to their order. No longer is he on the kill-or-be-killed back foot as he was in Chapters 2 and 3.

Fourth chapter of John Wick saga plays like an exhilarating, endless ... (Columbia Daily Tribune)

Wick can be shot, stabbed, and thrown off a building but just keeps getting re-set. Game on.

A graduate of Drury University and the University of Kansas, he created Filmsnobs.com, where he co-hosts a podcast. No matter how bloated and bombastic the “John Wick” films get, there’s plenty of exhilaration to enjoy. “John Wick: Chapter 4,” at its best, is a showcase for daring stunts and slick images. Wick seemingly cannot ever be killed — or even remotely injured — while his opponents have the marksmanship and mortality of the average “Star Wars” stormtrooper. It isn’t just the over-the-top stunts that elicit a reaction. The plot is beside to the point for many John Wick fans, but demands reporting nonetheless. "John Wick: Chapter 4” is full of convoluted character motivations and unclear story lines. To its credit, I never checked my watch and never felt restless. The only thing that makes sense about this structure is the stakes are clearly higher the more we go along. It can also be exhausting watching Wick dispatch of a cast of thousands while avoiding anything close to a paper cut. The scope and the budget have moved brackets exponentially. The viewing experience is an exhilarating showcase for stunt work and cinematography.

The Limits and Wonders of John Wick's Last Fight (Vulture)

Chad Stahelski's fourth 'John Wick' film (starring Keanu Reeves) is blissfully entertaining, but all of that beauty obscures a lack of emotional payoff.

In many ways, the Marquis and Wick are a study in opposites. Wick believes in formality, and the Marquis flouts the rules. What ends up most intriguing about his performance is the subtext of the movie’s denouement: the idea that Reeves is, for however long, ceding the John Wick spotlight — unlike his aging-star cohort (think Brad Pitt in Bullet Train and Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick), who welcome neophytes into their fold but insist on outlasting them. And it’s not just Reeves but the many actors in his orbit who shine with a blend of vengeful grace and humorous beats. He has already given up his eyesight in order to protect his daughter and get out, but here, he is forced to endure. The late Lance Reddick becomes a sacrificial lamb early on in this chapter, and his story line is shuffled away too quickly. So is the John Wick franchise’s approach, and it reflects a similarly potent understanding of the body’s seductive vulnerabilities. Director Chad Stahelski and cinematographer Dan Laustsen create arguably the best-looking of the John Wick films. In Chapter 4, Keanu Reeves endures so many violent falls that would kill anyone else, but he always gets up and continues to fight another day — the humor of this inevitability hitting at the same moment as the fear of what could actually end him. It’s far more narratively focused than its previous sequels, still managing to globe-trot a behemoth cast à la Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 while returning to a simpler conflict reminiscent of the original John Wick. Bugs begins by dropping a brick from the height of the building on the head of his foe. John Wick: Chapter 4, like entries in the franchise before it, treats the body with the elasticity and deranged joy of a Looney Tunes cartoon.

John Wick: Chapter 4 review: Keanu Reeves wins again with a ... (The A.V. Club)

Sprawling action sequences overpower a bloated story in the latest high-powered John Wick installment.

For all its extensive world-building, and the ways in which its characters and their choices feel like they track and fit together sensibly, this chapter drops the ball a bit with regards to coloring in the learned lessons of its protagonist’s journey. But the emotionality he brings to the character of Wick is an under-appreciated element of the franchise’s success. [John Wick: Chapter 4](https://www.avclub.com/film/reviews/john-wick-chapter-4-2023) is not a bad or mindless reserving of only orgiastic action excess. The film cries out for moments of quiet and reflection amid the din. This choice puts Wick on a path against an old friend and mentor, blind assassin Caine (Donnie Yen, a welcome franchise addition), who is beholden to the High Table for his own not-so-complicated reasons. Later, in a scene which reimagines Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy hallway fight on an incline, Wick has to punch and shoot his way up a lengthy, outdoor path of concrete stairs. As Wick makes preparation for a sunrise duel, he’s beset upon by hordes of thugs seeking to collect a bounty on his head, and has to do battle with seemingly half of Paris on the city streets. Despite all their elaborate trappings, in which the façade of a modern New York actually masks a secret universe of criminal enterprises with a proper respect for rules, and special luxury hotels that serve as a neutral ground for killers and thieves, the Wick films can basically be distilled to fist-forward disquisitions on the debate over fate and self-determination, and to a slightly lesser extent service versus self-interest. The body count stacks up, of course, but Wick is eventually presented with a work-around that Winston points out will give him a chance at what he claims to want: a definitive way out, a brokered truce. His actions, however, have consequences—and those ramifications rain down with immediacy upon Winston Scott (Ian McShane) and Shimazu Koji (Hiroyuki Sanada), managers of the Continental Hotel branches in New York and Osaka, respectively. [John Wick: Chapter 4](https://www.avclub.com/john-wick-4-joins-the-four-hour-original-cut-club-1850253723), the latest installment in the little action franchise that could, in which each sequel has virtually doubled the theatrical gross of its predecessor. While it would be easy to indulge a view of this [Keanu Reeves](https://www.avclub.com/keanu-reeves-performances-ranked-1850235722) series as one defined by up-the-ladder villains, the world of John Wick—a retired hitman pulled back into lethal old ways after his deceased wife’s posthumous gift, a puppy, is murdered during a home invasion—has been constructed as something at once labyrinthine, yet fairly simple.

'John Wick: Chapter 4' Review: There Will Be Blood, Yeah (The New York Times)

In the latest and longest movie set in Wick World, Keanu Reeves's titular assassin visits Paris and paints the town red.

It’s also reassuringly ordered, never more so than in its violence, which in Wick World is pure, eye-popping, body-shaking, transporting entertainment, something that (to borrow from [another philosopher](https://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/19/arts/television/dick-clark-tv-host-and-icon-of-new-years-eve-is-dead-at-82.html?pagewanted=all)) has a good beat and you can dance to. The constraints of Wick World put it safely on the side of full-blown fantasy, giving the series the feel of a grim fairy tale. [Point Blank](https://www.tcm.com/video/29683/point-blank-original-trailer/),” the Three Stooges and “ [Get Carter](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NtstlDW0Zo).” That said, the overall story is stripped down to the point of minimalism, especially when compared to the average superhero bloat-a-thon. For the most part, Wick chases or is chased by other assassins, shooting and stabbing, grappling and grunting in a series of visually distinct, meticulously staged and filmed set pieces. [how the franchise’s greatest action sequences came to be](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/19/movies/john-wick-action-scenes.html?action=click&pgtype=Article&state=default&module=styln-john-wick&variant=show®ion=MAIN_CONTENT_1&block=storyline_top_links_recirc). Life for many in Wick World is, to borrow Hobbes’s formulation, “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short,” but it’s also sentimental and It might seem like a distorted mirror of our world, but what’s notable are all the ways it’s different from ours — not just in its depiction of power but also of violence, which, for all the arterial spray, is as untethered from reality as it is in zombie flicks. This allows you to see and luxuriate in the performers’ physicality, in their grace and steely power, as well as to appreciate the geometry and precision of the fight choreography. Despite its seemingly Hobbesian aspect, Wick World does have rules, and by the second movie, the character is declared “excommunicado,” a word that underscores the High Table’s profile as a shadowy, quasi-religious elite manifestation of absolute power. A vulgar pleasure of the “John Wick” series is that it aestheticizes violence without the usual blah-blah rationales and appeals to conscience. This focus underscores the frailty and impermanence of these bodies, their humanness, especially Wick’s as this seemingly invincible man is repeatedly brutalized. A virtuoso of death, Wick (Keanu Reeves) has his reasons, or so the series insists, but he kills because it is what he does.
