Bank of England raises UK interest rates by quarter point to 4.25% (The Guardian)

Monetary policy committee votes to increase base rate after February's surprise rise in inflation.

Economists have suggested weaker levels of wage growth could reduce the risk of persistently high inflation. The extension of the government’s energy price guarantee, at £2,500 for an average household bill, would help real incomes remain broadly flat, rather than falling significantly. The The Bank’s official target for inflation is 2%. In a fortnight of heightened unease in global financial markets, the Bank’s monetary policy committee (MPC) voted by a majority of seven to two to increase the base rate for the 11th time in a row. [Bank of England](https://www.theguardian.com/business/bankofenglandgovernor) has raised interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point to 4.25% in response to higher than expected UK inflation and signs that Britain’s economy was holding up better than feared.

Bank of England hikes interest rates again following inflation shock (CNN)

The Office for Budget Responsibility, the government’s fiscal watchdog, expects inflation to fall rapidly, reaching around 3% in the final quarter of this year, helped by falling energy prices and further easing of supply bottlenecks. It added that the UK banking system “remains resilient.” The Bank of England’s job is made even more complicated by the fact that the UK economy is expected to shrink this year. “With a flagging economy and lower energy costs still set to drive a significant fall in inflation this year, despite February’s surprise increase, the case for cutting interest rates is only likely to grow,” commented Suren Thiru, economics director at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. The Bank of England said it would “continue to monitor closely” any effects from the banking crisis on credit conditions faced by households and firms. Bank of England Raises Rates to 4.25% as Inflation Persists (The New York Times)

Policymakers approved a quarter-point increase, to 4.25 percent, while affirming that British banks were “resilient.”

“The persistence of inflation appears more worrying in the U.K. Those prices “tend to be volatile and could therefore prove less persistent,” according to the minutes of the bank’s meeting. To some extent, those risks materialized in the surprising upturn in Wednesday’s data, which showed food prices rising in February at their fastest pace in 45 years and a measure of services inflation increasing. Bailey said in a video posted by the bank on Thursday. The Bank of England forecast that the inflation rate would fall significantly this year, and average about 4 percent around the end of the year. But it noted that, in Britain, wholesale bank funding costs, a measure of how much it costs banks to borrow money, particularly for short periods, had risen, a sign of increased risk in the banking sector. He argued that the central bank would pause rate increases because wage growth was easing and energy prices were lower. At the moment, “it was unclear how credit conditions and economic activity might be affected by recent banking-sector stress in a number of advanced economies,” the Bank of England said. The central bank had forecast that the inflation rate would fall to 9.9 percent. And wage growth has been weaker than expected, easing policymakers’ concerns that high wages in the private sector would make it harder to return inflation to the bank’s 2 percent target. Swim England failed to probe body-shaming claims - report (BBC News)

Swimming's governing body needs to overhaul its processes to keep swimmers safe, a review says.

Despite evidence young children were at risk of harm, Swim England said there were no safeguarding issues, the report found. It said a forthcoming independent review would listen to the experiences of those in its sports would help to "ensure there is a positive culture across our sports and that the highest standards of welfare and safeguarding are in place." Mr Weston's report concluded Swim England had a "confusing and inconsistent approach to safeguarding and concerns of child abuse in sport". It said its recently published safeguarding and welfare plan the Heart of Aquatics "sets out to continually improve the culture and practices within our sports and details our ongoing commitment to the entire aquatics community". Swim England's chief executive Jane Nickerson sanctioned the closure of Titans due to "very substantial issues", the report said, but it was "not clear how that sanction was reached" and club members were unable to challenge it. The report found the organisation had not prioritised cases of bullying and emotional abuse "even when those acts are said to have been carried out by coaches registered with Swim England".

Bank of England raises benchmark rate again (Business Day)

BoE governor Andrew Bailey says British banks are in a strong position after rescue of Credit Suisse and collapse of SVB.

“We don’t know whether it’s going to be the peak,” he told broadcasters. But of course it's far too high... Investors priced in one more quarter-point rate hike at its next meeting on May 11 before the BoE pauses, pushing up sterling moderately against the dollar. “The MPC will continue to monitor closely any effect on the credit conditions faced by households and businesses, and hence the impact on the macroeconomic and inflation outlook,” it said. “What I can tell you is that we've seen signs of inflation really peaking now. The BoE said inflation in the second quarter would be lower than the BoE forecast last month, helped by the government’s extension of state subsidies to lower households’ utility bills and a fall in international energy prices.

Euro qualifying: England, Harry Kane convincing in Italy win (ESPN)

England got their first-ever competitive win against Italy in Italy, and it was the perfect way to put their World Cup exit behind them.

England striker Harry Kane on the meaning of the result: "It is the first time England have won in Italy for a long, long time. Playing for England is probably my greatest feeling in football and I want to do it for as long as possible. Thank you to everyone in here and everyone who has made this dream a reality." A few minutes from halftime, Italian defender Giovanni Di Lorenzo was caught with his hand touching the ball in the box, possibly interfering with Harry Kane being able to win it. I can't remember what he said but I'm sure it was a on a video as everything is videoed these days and nothing stays in house. Italy began to take control of the midfield battle and mistakes crept into England's play, most obviously a palpably avoidable red card for Luke Shaw. To be a part of that is amazing. England were much the better side in the first half and deserved to extend their lead when [Giovanni Di Lorenzo](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/155904/Giovanni-Di-Lorenzo) was adjudged to have handled in the box, a decision Serbian referee Srdjan Jovanovic awarded on VAR review, allowing Kane to set the new England scoring record. Kane's clever hold-up play, particularly in the first half, was a reminder his ability extends far beyond goal-scoring. One of the few remaining questions England have to answer for under Southgate is their inconsistent record against the very best sides. Nothing will completely take away the pain of missing a penalty in England's World Cup quarterfinal defeat top France three months ago. This was also Southgate's 50th win as England manager, from 82 games -- a number only surpassed by Walter Winterbottom (78) and Sir Alf Ramsey (69).

Kane whipped in a cross midway through England's dominant first half that was begging to be tapped in at the back post but Grealish was 15 yards away. All his good work in Naples was undone by avoidable errors, which will see plenty calling for him to lose his place in the starting XI. On Thursday night he was the standout player on the pitch in the first half. But a chance was handed to him Naples, preferred to Phil Foden as Marcus Rashford was missing with injury. On the evidence that's gone before Maguire will start against Ukraine on Sunday, but the pressure will be firmly on again to perform. With Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips mopping up behind him, Bellingham is thriving in the more attacking role he was handed by the England manager during the World Cup. All the while, England were sinking further and further back, unable to muster so much as a shot in the second half. He had looked weighed down with the pressure before his miss against France but has responded superbly to that setback with a glut of goals for Tottenham. It's no wonder the biggest clubs in the world are scrambling to sign him for huge sums this summer. And yet, it is also possible to find familiar flaws in the performance. It must have been nerve-racking, given the enormity of the moment and what had happened in December. Rooney now hands the baton onto Kane - and the new record holder looks to run with it out of sight.

'Complete forward Kane can push record into distance' (BBC Sport)

Harry Kane deserves to stand in the company of England greats and can push his scoring record far into the distance of others, writes Phil McNulty.

He can link play from all parts, has a prodigious work-rate and offered so much more than goals in his international career. As at club level, the trophy is missing. Such are the high standards he maintains, there is no reason why Kane cannot end his England career with a total that will take an awful lot of beating - and a record that will need a truly great striker to overtake it. What should be remembered after this night in Naples is England have been privileged to have such an outstanding striker at their disposal, someone who has every right to stand in the company of those he overtook in the 44th minute of their first win against Italy in Italy since 1961. And then there was the heartache of the World Cup semi-final loss to Croatia in Russia in 2018, the Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy at Wembley and the personal heartache of that France game in Qatar. The heartfelt congratulations from Rooney and Lineker was an accurate reflection of the respect in which Kane is held throughout the game, both as a striker and inspirational leader of this England team - a personality so hugely admired by his colleagues.
