The businesses hardest hit by liquidations in South Africa (BusinessTech)

Over 240 South African businesses have been liquidated so far this year. New data from Statistics South Africa shows that from the start of January 2023 ...

The economic outlook for South Africa remains dire. February 2023 was, however, a return to the pattern, with liquidations falling very close to figures from last year, 2020 and 2018. These costs are mimicked to a smaller degree in medium and small-scale businesses as well. Load shedding shows little sign of improvement. The graph below shows the number of liquidations over the start of each year compared to a decade: The total number of liquidations remained unchanged during the three months ended February 2023 compared with the three months ended February 2022, added the group.

Another warning that South Africa is at risk of becoming a failed state (BusinessTech)

South Africa is in a terrible state due to several service delivery failures, with warnings that the country is at risk of collapsing.

Time is ticking for South Africa to mull whether to arrest Putin (Mail and Guardian)

On 17 March, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin for his alleged war crimes in Ukraine.

While South Africa attempted to withdraw from the Rome Statute after the Al-Bashir controversy, the country remains a member of the ICC. However, Zuma did not command forces to make the arrest and Al-Bashir left South Africa after the summit. When Al-Bashir came to South Africa for the African Union summit, the ICC expected the country to arrest and extradite him. However, president of the ICC Piotr Hofmanski dismissed the Russian claims, arguing that “the court has jurisdiction over crimes committed in the territory of a state party or a state which has accepted its jurisdiction”. On 17 March, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin for his alleged war crimes in Ukraine. In 2015, when Jacob Zuma was president, the court had a warrant of arrest for president of Sudan Omar al-Bashir for his alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur.

Consumer inflation reached a 13-year high of 6.9% in 2022 (2009: 7.1%) and is forecast to average around 5.8% in 2023. Take-home pay tracked in the BankservAfrica Take-home Index (BTPI) showed a slight recovery in February 2023. Shoprite has exited a number of African countries and is re-investing in South Africa. The strength of the JSE is paramount as it is a window in which foreign investors look through for solid and world class South African companies. This is the highest on the continent and not many countries in Africa can reassure investors if they want to move their money. There aren’t much super-economies on the African continent that perform better than South Africa in terms of democratic institutions. There is an increasingly dwindling effort to paint a balanced picture of news reflecting both the positive and the negative. “If it bleeds, it leads and if does not bleed it can’t lead,” is a mantra long practiced by merchants of doomsday who buy ink by the barrel.

It also argues for a clarification of the respective roles of the Trade, Industry and Competition Minister and the Finance Minister in taking the final decision on a duty. In addition, it argued that procedural delays were having a chilling effect on the use of trade instruments by South African companies, with the number of applications falling 62% last year when only eight applications were made compared with 21 in the previous year. What applied in 2019 is very different to the real-world scenario in 2023 and trade decisions need to be based on the now, not the past,” MacKay asserts.
