It is still worth watching for those looking to explore new avenues in the streaming world. Before the first episode is over, the series is already on its way to making a point. This makes the story more believable and far more watchable. While Unseen is largely based on already done-and-dusted tropes, its placement in present-day South African society and its compelling lead are the two aspects that breathe life into this Netflix adaptation. Altering the social scenario by basing it in South Africa is a major step that makes Unseen stand out, apart from its appeal to the English-speaking crowd. While it is possible for viewers to confuse the show with another film of the same name, released just a few days ago, this series is entirely different from the film.

Adapted from the Turkish drama "Fatma," the South African series "Unseen" follows the life of a woman named Zenzi, who, after the disappearance of her.

Probably, if there is a second season of “Unseen,” we would get to know if the police force and Ngesi are able to bring out the truth in front of the world and if Naledi is able to avenge the death of her sister. In a situation like this, you are overcome with a desire to make a joke out of the show's title, but I will resist my urges. If the husband indeed is "toxic" and Zenzi is "better off without him," then the series doesn't convincingly justify this notion. Unseen is an impersonal project and simply exists to recycle a been-there-seen-before material. Another point that is told to us constantly, in the beginning, is that Zenzi's husband (Vuyo Dabula) is toxic and that she is "better off without him." Unseen is so devoid of surprises that you can guess what a character will do next. Mabalane is stuck with a colorless protagonist who mainly comes with a dour expression. Almost everyone refers to her as "invisible," and a journalist says that people like Zenzi know about "us" but "we don't know anything about them" - twice! If a character is presumed dead, you can be sure he/she will turn up later. A character literally utters the same line to Zenzi at one point. And then there is also the fact that the husband really loves his wife. Before we get to the mentioned question, the same police officer informs someone that Zenzi is responsible for multiple murders. All Zenzi had to do was place the drugs and leave the premises.

This is not Revenge (the one with Emily VanCamp) nor are we in the Hamptons. Not that it’s the best series we can see nowadays, but it is a welcome attempt to move to a more realistic thriller with believable characters. Entertaining, well paced, with the impediment of the production.

We have the same issues with Unseen that we had with Fatma, which is basically that the first episode has some plot holes. We do believe that she’s killing out of both fear (her first killing) and rage (her second). That rage comes from the fact that her and Max’s son Esulu (Omhle Tshabalala) was killed at some point during Max’s prison term. “The daughter killed him,” Zenzi says, just going on her gut feelings. But just because it’s not subtle doesn’t mean it won’t be entertaining to see Zenzi more than hold her own with the crime lords Cape Town. At the house of one of her wealthy clients, the homeowner tells Zenzi that she should let toxic men like Max back in her life. But Zenzie certainly isn’t done, especially now that Raymond knows that she’s the one that killed Jackson. Zenzi takes the gun she grabbed from Raymond’s open safe and shoots.
