In recent years, the University of Cape Town (UCT) has commemorated our academics' appointments to full professorship through the inaugural lecture series.
The VC Inaugural Lectures will be held in abeyance during this period. At the same time, the number of lectures which can be accommodated in the VC’s Inaugural Lecture series is limited. These inaugural lectures are a central part of the university’s academic project, and provide a platform for professors who were appointed in the preceding five years to present the body of research that they have been focusing on during their careers.
The Pitch UCT applications have opened for 2023 and the programme will be hosting a launch session in collaboration with the d-school at UCT.

In Shaheed’s case, the ramp that was created for the older trustee reflected an existing power dynamic he was unable to change. In the Qur’an, there is no discrimination around disability, and that needs to be highlighted. It talks about impairments such as blindness and deafness, but in the context of seeing and hearing Islam’s message,” she said. In Shaheed’s case, Mayat said he was very aware that his wheelchair had to be clean when entering the mosque. However, in most scholarship focusing on disability, religion, as a way of understanding and dealing with disability, is side-lined or absent, she said.
