Join us as we applaud an all-women shift at busy South African ports and gain insight from a powerhouse CEO this National Women's Day!
In celebration of National Women's Day, the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) surprised everyone with a bold initiative! Across three of South Africa's busiest ports, an all-women shift of port workers was deployed, showcasing the grit and determination of South African women in an industry traditionally dominated by men. This incredible move not only recognizes the vital role women play in the workforce but also sends a powerful message about equality and empowerment! Now that's a wave of change we can all get behind!
But the festivities didn't stop there! We had the pleasure of speaking with Hlengiwe Mbambo, the trailblazing CEO of OriginalNerds Communication. She shared some invaluable insights on what it means to empower women in pioneering fields. “Women have so much potential,” she emphasized during the interview. “When they are given opportunities, they shine and push boundaries.” Chancellor’s note—shine on, superwoman!
Reflecting on the significance of August 9th, this date was not just randomly chosen. It commemorates the 1956 protest by female garment workers in New York City who stood up against poor working conditions, low pay, and exhausting hours. This brave stand laid the foundation for society to recognize women's rights, igniting a global movement for equality that resonates today. Women’s Day in South Africa has become a poignant reminder that the fight for gender equity continues, and every step counts!
As we celebrate these powerful women, it’s essential to remember that the spirit of collaboration is key! Just like pro surfing relies on the harmony of waves and wind, so too does the advancement of women rely on community support. Let's not just applaud but actively participate in encouraging women’s involvement in all fields. After all, the sky's the limit!
Did you know that the first National Women’s Day was celebrated in South Africa in 1994? And it’s also interesting to note that even as we celebrate women in the workforce, studies show that companies with more women in leadership roles perform better! So whether it’s at the ports or in board rooms, let’s keep championing women — it’s not just a women’s issue, it’s a human issue!
